Just came back to find Sur on the nest feeding the chicks.

It looks as if he arrived at 2:53 with two small birds. Dee and Ess need food, and I'm happy they have food, and I'm not going to watch the feeding.

3:31 pm
Feeding is over, and Sur is sitting with Dee and Ess.

The chicks were up preening a couple of minutes ago - and showing off their nice big crops. Watching on my iPad so no pictures - don’t remember how to do that but it probably requires dexterity I don’t have!

Good night, everyone!

Good morning, everyone - and thanks for the weather and early morning feeding, Bev!

Older chick Dee has more dark feathers showing - but I think younger chick Ess is almost as big now, so once they both have feathers, it will be a challenge. Dee can and does still put Ess in submission occasionally - and that will probably continue until they leave the nest.

Looking back, the feeding continued until 5:55 pm, and both chicks were fed. I think they were being fed leftovers, so they may not have gotten a huge amount of food even though it was a long feeding.

Sur arrived at 6:40 am with a small fish, and started feeding leftovers, then moved on to the fish.

It's now 7:06 am, it looks as if it may be raining lightly, and Dee has his/her head tucked in and Ess is sleeping alongside. The temperature today is 13C, which is around 55F - so not hot, but but not cold either.

Res arrives with something - maybe a fish?

She moves over beside the chicks.

Sur flew off at 7:24 am; a minute or two later, Res went to the food item she brought in and began feeding. Ess was there first, then Dee joined in.

It seems to be raining a bit harder, now. Parts of both chicks are tucked in under Res.
20190514_007.jpg

I'm thinking this may be the first rain we've had since the chicks were small - and I'm a bit surprised she isn't doing a full mumbrella with wings stretched to cover them a bit more. They are four weeks old and have their heavy down, but I'd think the down would get wet eventually without feathers to protect it.

7:50 am
Res and chicks all snuggled in.

Thanks so much Judy for the scaps and Obs!

Raining and the chicks are cuddled close to Res and I am thinking that is Dee on the left with the darker feathers . :)

A few minutes ago Res carefully stood up and backed off the chicks and gave a good shake. And the chicks immediately scuttled over and back under her - they know where they should be in the rain.

I have to say (humanizing a bit) that Mom Res doesn't look happy - but she sure looks dedicated.

Thanks for your reports, Sue, Bev and gemini! Glad to see that the showers are ending this evening, and it's not supposed to get too cold tonight.

1:15 pm
Res just arrived - little ones had been chittering a bit - maybe chilly?
20190514_014.jpg

Both are snuggling in beside her.
20190514_015.jpg

Res is working on the nest and moving straw and other nest material around - but I don't think she can make a nest cup big enough to brood these two big chicks!
