From last night.

Sorry all, I had a full day kayaking on the river yesterday and hit the hay hard.

2055: I can tell you that the SF? did not stay the night on the high perch. Here is the last look just before she flew... over to the nest!

She picked up 1 stick and moved it, then another and pushed it

ADDED: I'm saying "she" but I am not at all confident now that I see the Eagle in the nest, and looking back at the eye in the first scap. perhaps Judy or gemini? when you get a chance, take a look. I'd love to catch them on the nest in the daytime

rollback cont.

2058 - Scratching an itch

2059 - Like they were startled by something, they jumped and hopped over to the left (their right)

then they hopped off the nest and by the sounds of it, possibly over to one of the western perches. Not sure what had them all hoppy :D

end of the rollback from last night.

Good morning SR friends and hello Nightowl! thanks for starting our day. The heat is back and it will be here for the next several days. Hopefully, it won't get as hot as it had been during the first heat wave.

0500 - One of our Eagles arrived from the north and did a couple of wing stretches when they landed.

0501 - Another wing stretch - Is this the SM?

05:01:43 - More stretching of that same wing

05:02:19 - More stretching. Something looks funny.

05:02:26 - Moving a stick while clearly bothered by that wing (our left, their right)

05:02:39 - Trying to work something out of that wing

05:02:53 - More wing stretching - sorry if it's repetitive but it might be important to keep an eye on it

Scratching an itch and allowing us to see some of that tail

0506 - Staring down at the nest with periodic movement of that same wing - they seem bright active and alert

0507 - Now they are pecking at the nest bugs it seems :D

0516 - Still captivated by movement in the nest.. it's gotta be bugs right?

less wing movement now

0518 - Jets out the wing a bit

0525 - A quick glance up :rh:

0528 - Our Eagle walked over to the western edge and went out of view. He did not return to the nest after that.

I'm leaving the South Cam on the nighttime perch as that has been also been a daytime perch a lot lately. I have to go back out on the Fraser River today because I left my phone out there by one of my Eagles' nests. If by chance anyone is watching when one of our Eagles is on the nest, please try and zoom in with the South Cam so we can get a more accurate ID. I'm leaning more towards this being the SM after seeing him on the north cam this morning. But ??? :dunno:

I'll be back late this afternoon, or early evening.

There's an adult on the night perch - I've zoomed closer and logged out again. So far haven't seen much more than leaves and the back of the head.

Thanks for your posts, CC - watching the activity you described starting here - viewtopic.php?f=114&p=602889&sid=8d61f7 ... 3c#p602881 - it does look a bit odd with those wing stretches and rubs. I'm making a video of part of it.

My initial guess is that this is SF, mostly based on the mottled feathers.

Got 5:00:25 - 5:08:05 (not processed yet #1795).

Need to take a break - will look at the next batch soon.

Added - :vid: Dawn - Part 1 of 3 (7:41)

I think it's SF in the cottonwood tree - I'd expect more dark around the eye if it was SM, and the beak looks more female to me, though I'm not good at judging that.

Sorry for jumping around a bit - going back to the early morning visit....

Off topic, but I'll connect it in a minute - I took a bit of a tumble recently and apparently bruised some of the muscles around my bottom. No serious damage, but it's uncomfortable and I fidget whenever I have to stand or sit for more than a few minutes - and I sometimes end up in positions that look pretty uncomfortable, but actually feel good (at least briefly).

It may be because of how I'm feeling - but that's what this reminds me of.

The adult does seem to be picking at things in the nest in this video.

5:09:00 - 5:16:30 #1797

I will note that if this is the same eagle who is now on the night perch, she's looking fine and acting normal, so maybe she just slept wrong or something. :dunno:

The adult is still perched in the cottonwood.

Continuing from the dvr....

5:25:00 - 5:28:20

The adult was still occasionally stretching a wing, but generally seemed more alert and looking around. She(?) appeared to duck once or twice, so there may have been bugs flying around.

Off to upload the videos, then I'll add the links.

Adult still in the same place.
20220806_007.jpg

I've pulled the cam back a bit and did take a quick look at the rest of the tree and didn't see a second adult.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish processing and uploading the videos after dinner.

I am out of the cam and away from the computer.

Added August 7 -

Text for YouTube to go with the three videos above:

Dawn at Surrey Reserve - part 1

August 6 2022, 5-5:30 am - One of three videos of the female at our Surrey Reserve bald eagle cam nest. The first video has her arrival, and then it looks to me almost as if she slept wrong and is trying to get a kink out of her wing - and I'm pretty sure eagles don't do that, but one or both adults often come to the nest just before dawn, and I haven't seen this sort of movement before. (Note - she was looking fine later.) The second video has a few more stretches and a lot of poking at the nest and some standing with her head down. The third video is more what we normally see - some standing and looking around, and suddenly becoming very alert when she notices something. It is the time of year when eagles take a "vacation" from their nesting area and head north to enjoy the salmon runs, so we're happy that she is still around. ~JudyB

Hello Judy, thanks so much for taking a look and I continue to send you lots of healing love and light.

When I see that Eagle perched there, with that beak and that mottled tail you mentioned, convince me it is the SF we're seeing. I'm still not able to identify them by the differences in their eyes, yet (;

Now that we know it's the SF, I just want to say that I love that she's staying behind to keep an eye on her territory to date when others have flown. I monitor 3 nests along the Fraser River in Chilliwack and of those, none reared any youngsters to fledge this year. I found another nest today, only because I could hear a young Eagle demanding food, and a parent was keeping watch nearby. It was nice to hear the demands of a young Eagle.

I know that one of my wilderness nesting pairs returned to a bad nest this past fall (it was bad in the summer too :cry1: ) and they did not use it or appear to rebuild within the territory. I saw them both perched near the nest tree today.

Anyhow, my point is, that I see mature Eagles around when they should be migrating. Wouldn't it be nice if the SF was one of those who stay? :w00t:

Scap shows the beak of a female IMO

1821 - Beautiful curious SF is still perched and on watch over her urban territory.

I have been there often enough to know the area well. She looks down often and seemingly has no fear of humans. I've had her look down on me a few times, at least I thought it was her :rh:

0500 - The SF hopped onto the nest from one of the east perches. She was mostly distracted by those nest bugs. I cannot imagine what else it would be.

0512 - well that was interesting. She jumped from near the centre, over to the South East edge. It was almost like she saw, a squirrel perhaps? I have no idea

She moved over to the western side and then out to a west perch by the sound of it.

0522 - She's back on the nest and I think she was trying to break up some sticks as I could see her tugging away

Yes, she broke off a stick from the nest tree or from the nest itself :D and then brought it over to the other side of the nest. She's so cute.

After she placed that stick, it was back to watching the bugs, or maybe she can hear the resident squirrels? Only she knows

0525 - A quick hop over to the north side and then quickly over to the southwest side before she flies.

The SF was very active this morning and seemed to have worked out that wing issue

1536 - I stopped in for a peek and see what I initially thought was a silly squirrel taking a nap in an Eagles' nest - I quickly realized this squirrel was passionately eating/licking something on or in this piece of wood. I decided to bring the South Cam closer, just in case this little Eastern Grey Squirrel not paying attention became dinner for our SF or any raptor with good eyes. Not that I would like that! but still.

By the time I zoomed in, the little fella was up and then disappeared east. Good idea little furry one.

Of course, I googled "what do grey squirrels eat?" and apparently they do eat insects and bugs so maybe that is the purpose of SR's resident squirrel.
