Surrey Reserve 2021-2022 Observation and Discussion

Good morning, everyone, and nightowl!

Checking the dvr from last night....

One of the adults arrived with a long stick at 9:11 pm.

He(?) quickly placed the stick, looked around a bit, then moved over to the bird carcass. He stepped onto it, and I thought he might be going to fly off and dump it (I don't generally favor littering, but in this case, I might make an exception - it's been there a long time!).

However, he decided to see if he could find any more meat, and as soon as he tried to pull a piece free - the other adult appeared, landing almost on top of him and the food! (Still not positive which is which.)

She(?) apparently realized he didn't have anything interesting, and moved off to check the nest cup area. The shading on the tail of the eagle on the left is what's throwing me off - but everything else makes me think this is Surrey Male (SM for short) - and they do sometimes get dirt on their tails, and I suspect that's what's happening here. It sort of looked as if the lower part of the tail might be a bit dirty when he flew in.

SM flew off at 9:14. SF (Surrey Female) puttered around a bit longer, and moved the carcass back nearer the trunk, then she flew off at 9:18 am. It's not visible in the picture of her below, but I did see enough of her tail to be pretty sure my IDs were correct.

I'm always amazed at how late it's light in BC - sunset isn't until 9:19 pm today, and will even get a bit later.

I didn't find any additional visits last night.

One of the adults arrived with a stick at 5:50 am this morning, and did a bit of reorganizing of the sticks on the nest.

I think this is SF.

She left shortly afterwards.


It's now 7:11 am, and I didn't find any additional visits.

Very watchful in between bites. SF or SM? One of ours?

Whoa.. someone landed and there was a food fight. I think the SM landed with some old prey and managed to eat some before the SF arrived to claim it, which resulted in a bit of a fight.

2154 - In comes the SF

2203 - She left the nest and vocals were heard after that. I bet she joined the SM on the night perch

TUESDAY, JUNE 21, 2022

8:16 am Checked the DVR but didn't see any visits after the late evening visit CC observed.

Good morning, everyone, and nightowl!

Wow - that was some food fight! I decided it needed a video - this starts with the North cam and then has a longer section from the South cam showing SM moving food around in his crop before going up to the little perch. Watching that, I think he knew that SF was nearby and was trying to shovel in as much food as possible before she showed up, and then went through some interesting neck yoga to rearrange the food in his crop - it looked like more than the usual neck wiggle to move food from the crop to the digestive tract.

I did not see any additional activity last night.

The adult perched lower (and mostly hidden) flew off at 4:50 am, and the one higher up left at 5:06 pm.


It's now 8:46 am, and I've checked the dvr and didn't see any activity this morning beyond their leaving the night perch.

I've just checked the dvr, and I don't think anyone has come to the nest today. They do like the dusk, so hopefully those of you on the west coast will see them stopping by soon.

It's late on the east coast, so I'll say good night. Sweet dreams, people and eagles.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2022

Good morning, everyone, and nightowl!

There was a quick visit by both adults yesterday evening, with the first adult arriving at 10:02 pm and the second one arriving a minute later.

The first one to arrive flew off at 10:04 pm; the second one poked in the nest briefly, did some preening, then flew up to the little perch at 10:05 pm.

She, or maybe he, flew off at 10:06 pm.

I did not find any additional visits yesterday evening.

One of the adults arrived at the nest at 4:31 am, and moved the bedraggled bird carcass.

Not sure which adult it is, but they did some serious S&L (standing and looking)

and then flew off at 4:37 am.


It's now 8:12 am, and I didn't see any additional visits so far this morning.

THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 2022

Good morning, everyone, and thanks for starting the day here, nightowl!

The dvr goes back to 7:40 pm, and the first two time I went through quickly I didn't see anyone, but looking more slowly, there was a brief visit at 9:25 pm - maybe SM? I think he brought a stick, and he also rearranged the old bird carcass.

He(?) flew off at 9:27 pm.


It's now 7:45 am, and I didn't see any additional visits during the last 12 hours. I did a quick check of the perch near the buildings, and, not surprisingly, no one was there.

I checked the North dvr back to gemini's post and didn't see any activity (and the gull carcass is in the same spot - they do seem to move it whenever they stop by).

The North cam (and White Rock CU) seem to be either flickering or reverting to the start of the DVR what seems like a couple of times a minute; the cams seem fine when I log into them; I've let Ken know.

Good morning, everyone, and nightowl!

From last night -
I checked the north cam dvr and did not see any visits to the nest before midnight.

A zoomer found one of the adults perched near the buildings at 9:52 pm.

All the big beautiful leaves made it very hard to keep the cam focused on the eagle, but at least one eagle was there most of the night.

I also want to include this beautiful sunset picture.

Continuing from the dvr....

An adult arrived on the nest at 3:53 am.

It looked as if the adult flew off the night perch a minute or so before that, so it seems likely this is the same eagle. I'm not sure which one it is, but they moved a few sticks and checked out the nest cup.

The adult stayed in that slightly strange position in the nest cup area for over a half hour, finally getting up at 4:30, looking around a bit, and then flying off at 4:32 am.

It's now 8:31 am, and I didn't see any additional visits.


Friday, June 24

Ken will be doing some work on his server later today, so all the embedded cams will be offline while that happens. This should not affect the ability of zoomers to use the cams, but will reset the dvr.

I was just getting ready to check the dvr, when someone arrived on the nest.

Not sure which adult it is, but they brought a bloody food item.

After a while, he went to the tree near the buildings, I think bringing some of the food with him.

One of the adults (likely the same one as earlier, who is probably SM) is still perched in a leafy tree near the buildings.

Ken needed to reboot the servers, so I can't check back for earlier visits, but on the plus side, all the cams should be running a bit smoother, at least for a few days.

Time for me to say goodnight. I'll leave the cam looking at the eagle in the tree, with hopes someone will move it later if he leaves, or if she arrives beside him and we need a wider view.
