ABOUT OUR CAMS with thanks to AEF
Three high-definition cams are available on this page. Two are mounted on the nest tree and provide different views of the nest. The third cam is mounted on a nearby tree at a lower angle and shows the nest tree and the canopy. If you watch for a while, you may be lucky enough to see eagles flying to and from the tree, and when the eaglets get to a certain size, you will see them begin to branch and ultimately fledge the nest.

The three video cam views are accessed by clicking on “Other Views,” located at the bottom right of the screen when mousing over the video screen. The three views will be shown at the bottom of the screen as thumbnails, and you can simply click the view you want to watch. By default, cam one has been selected.

At night, an infrared light is turned on. The eagles cannot see this light; it is outside their visible spectrum of light. Neither can humans. If you were at the nest site, looking up at the tree at night, you would only see light from the moon or stars. The infrared light is converted into visible light (black and white) by the camera.

The nest is located about 80 feet up in a Longleaf Pine tree and was built by the resident eagles approximately 11 years ago. Through the years, the nest has grown considerably in size and weight (likely weighing close to a ton)

In order to protect the eagles and their nest, the specific location of this nest is private and cannot be disclosed.

NEST HISTORY

Beginning October 1, 2013, the American Eagle Foundation (AEF) began providing live video streaming from a wild eagle nest located near the NE coast of Florida. The nest is located about 80 feet up in a Longleaf Pine tree and was built by the resident eagles approximately 11 years ago. Through the years, the nest has grown considerably in size and weight (likely weighing close to a ton). Since 2008, Gretchen Butler (Volunteer for Audubon “EagleWatch” Program and the American Eagle Foundation “Eagle Nest Cam” Program) has closely monitored and documented important events associated with the resident eagles and their offspring.

Until the 2018-2019 season, Romeo and Juliet’s behavior was very predictable. As usual, they once again returned In late August or early September to begin their nesting cycle, which includes bonding, mating, nestorations, egg-laying, and incubation.

As stated in the first part of this page, while defending the nest territory, Juliet was attacked and injured by other adult eagle in the area. Juliet left the nest area December 17, 2018 and was not seen again. Romeo tried his best to defend the nest, brood the eggs, and provide food for himself until one egg hatched on Christmas Day. Minutes after the eaglet emerged from its shell, another eagle that had been following Romeo flew into the nest and took the newly hatched eaglet. Romeo left the following day and neither Romeo nor Juliet have been seen in the area since.

May 8 th

FRIDAY TUCK-IN: Our Jules wasn't seen today, but Glenn was on the lookout for her in the Hamlet several times. We really believe when she flew yesterday morning, she flew out of the Hamlet. She's likely close by checking out the beauty she's been observing yet unable to experience. We have every reason to believe she will return to the nest. It's highly possible Mom is with her. Romy did some serious flapping and hovering today. He will soon be out on the branch, but in his timing....not ours! Weather has been spectacular. Tomorrow may bring showers in the afternoon. SED to all and please be safe and remain healthy. :SamEmoji: :GabbyEmoji: (Samson & Gabby)

May 10. gretchen_AEF 21:47 NOTICE: For those feeling concerns for Jules, be certain when she fledged, it was intentional. She was confident, strong and ready. It's not uncommon for a fledgling to stay away from the nest for a few days on their first flight. Some return the same day, and some don't. They are all very individual. Our guess is Samson and/or Gabby know where she is and likely feeding her off-site. We spotted her in flight the morning she flew. She landed in a tree and soon took off. We haven't seen her since, although we are on the look-out and aren't concerned at this point. Romy is healthy and just not as assertive as Jules. He never has been. He will soon branch out and take flight as Jules did......in his time, not ours! We are all anxious for Jules' return, but we continue to Trust The Eagles (TTE)!

THURSDAY TUCK-IN: Romy advanced today and really got some air even flying across the nest landing on the Sunset Branch this morning. He is certainly building strength in both his legs and wings 💪 . He's ready to fly but might not yet know it! We didn't see Gabby at the nest today but Samson was there in the morning and this evening. He flew about 8pm across the street to the Evening Tree (ET) and tucked at 8:20. Tomorrow Romy will be 12 wks! 🎉 SED to all! 😴

Many are still inquiring and concerned about Jules. We have not spotted Jules. She possibly caught up with the local fledgling that visited the nest. In the past they usually do return to be fed, but she was quite advanced and may be foraging and fishing on her own and learning from the other fledgling, or Samson and/or Gabby may have fed her off-site. One year at this nest a fledgling was gone for 5 days and returned after first flight. Three seasons ago Hope left soon after she branched and wasn't seen for some time (a fly by). Then approx a month from when she fledged, she showed up at the nest. It's still very likely Jules will return yet. She had an intentional fledge showing complete confidence and strength. Although we would love to see her back to the nest soon, we are not concerned. She has always been more assertive than Romy. Romy appears to be in no hurry to fledge, yet he's not considered late. On Friday, May 15 Romy will be 12wks. Some don't fledge
Some don't fledge until 13-14 wks. Stay tuned! 🦅

May19 gretchen_AEF#1945 Today at 10:08 PM
For those concerned or inquiring about Gabby & Jules.....Jules was last spotted on the day she fledged (Thursday, May 7). She was seen off-site flying, landing and flying again. She was confident and strong. A juvenile BE visited the nest prior to her fledge. It's very possible Jules hooked up with the juvie and is learning the ropes. Although we all would love to see her back at the nest, she may yet return, but she has no need to return if she's fending for herself. That would equate to success! It's also possible she and Gabby are out there together as Gabby was last seen on Wednesday, May 13. Last season Gabby frequented the nest and the Hamlet area and was last seen on May 11. Is she following a pattern? Time will tell, as this is her first breeding season, and we have unanswered questions....yet no concerns. Samson has faithfully provided for Romy. Food delivery is all Romy needs provided by his parents at this point. Once he masters his flying skills (landing is typically the challenge), he will begin to fish and forage and provide for himself. It's most likely he will team up with Samson and learn from his example, although much is instinctual. Last season Samson was last seen on the LYT July 4. It's expected he will remain in the area for awhile. Romy is showing all the milestones and routine we have seen in the past years at this nest. He is doing a fine job and sure loves and defends his home. Stay tuned!
