Re: Decorah Iowa 2018-2019
Thank you for the welcome back. I've been a bit busy. During August my daughter and myself were raising Monarch butterflies from caterpillars that we found on her milkweed. It was totally amazing to watch the caterpillars from a chrysalis and then hatch into a butterfly. Then my husband and I took a short trip up in North Michigan to see the beautiful fall colors. Now I'm helping my daughter with her fall harvest. I just happened to be watching this morning when I seen the eagle. From what I have read Raptor Resource thinks it was the DM. I sure am looking forward to this season. Big Hugs to all of you.

10-13-18 ~ Day Trip to Decorah
Story and Photos by Robin Brumm
I woke up early on Saturday and was pretty sure I heard my car saying it wanted to go to Decorah, so of course I HAD to go to Decorah!! I got there around 7:30am and didn't see anybirdy in the N1 tree, on the maple tree, or in the bluffs. I drove over by N2B, parked on the shoulder of the road and grabbed my binoculars. I searched the trees and saw 2 eagles. One, which looked slightly thinner, that was perched straight up above the nest. The other, a little more full-feathered looking, was perched in a tree to the west of the N2B tree. It made me smile seeing both Mom & DM perched so close to the N2B nest.
I was only able to take a couple of photos before Mom flew off to the maple tree, so I followed over so I could get some photos of her. As I parked, she flew off and over the bluffs to the east of the retention pond. DM flew from the N2B area and followed Mom over the bluff.
After a bit, Mom flew back to the maple tree. She was there for awhile, and flew off, circled the retention pond, stopped in mid air, turned, flew straight down, leveled off and grabbed a fish. She flew around the N2B area and over to the horse pasture tree to eat her fish. She finished eating, feaked her beak, flew back and circled the pond and caught another fish. She took this one to a tree just east of the retention pond. After she ate that one, she flew off that tree, circled around and flew to the trees on the bluff.
A little while later, DM came flying in from the N2B area and joined mom on the bluff. They were perched close together, DM in front, and Mom in back. They were perched in the same spot that Mom and Dad always perched, and a wave of emotion hit me … a little sad seeing them at such a special spot, but also happy knowing that Mom has someone she is comfortable with and looking out for her. DM stayed about 15-20 minutes and then flew off toward the south. I waited for awhile and thought I saw DM come back. It looked like he was going to land next to Mom on the bluffs, but continued on and landed in a tree to the right of the rocky bluff. I got out my binoculars to look and saw that it wasn't DM, i
it was a Sub Adult! Looking at the coloring of the head, I would guess it would be about 4 years old. Mom was keeping an eye on it, but didn't seem too concerned at its presence. The SA stayed for quite awhile before it flew off.
Mom continued to perch on the bluff and then flew back to the maple tree. She was watching the retention pond, and quickly flew off and snatched a fish out the pond. She flew to the horse pasture tree to eat it, and then took off back to the maple. I'm thinking Mom was really hungry today, because she again flew off the maple and caught another fish! It was a very breezy day and after Mom ate her fish, she flew off and circled up rather quickly and soared over the bluff, before continuing on to the north and out of sight.
I decided that since nobirdy was in the area, that it was a good time to head for home. As I was driving home, I smiled thinking about Mom catching 4 fish in the pond today. It made me think of the day she broke her own record bringing 16 fish back to the nest for her eaglets! What an amazing Mom she is. I was also glad to see Mom and DM perched together for awhile. I did ask them when they thought they would start working on the nest, lol. I'm pretty sure I got the "Look" from Mom, and DM said, it's all on eagle time! I know, I know ... trust the eagles!

It looks like DM paid a visit to N2B this morning! https://youtu.be/OdaKQzz0h5o. He flies in around 27 seconds, rearranges some snow-covered sticks, removes a little snow, and finds some nestovers to nibble on before flying away! This is the first time we've seen him in the nest since we turned the cameras back on. We hope to see more of DM and Mom in the days and weeks to come!
While we're glad to see the sun today, yesterday's snow-covered juvenile eagle was undeniably lovely. Could this have been one of Mom's offspring? She didn't seem to mind it perching near by, although it wasn't on the nest tree and adult eagles often seem more tolerant of juvenile and subadult eagles in their territories. We were able to rule out D30 by comparing beaks, and we didn't see any of the white tail markings we associate with D29, D30, or D31. Still, a lovely young eagle is always a treat to see! https://youtu.be/69aHjUQZzgo
