FROM RRP ..thanks Heather for the heads up! :huggie:
Raptor Resource Project
1 hr ·
After D32 was found on Friday, June 7, we connected with Dr. Laura Johnson to see if she could help care for and assess him. Brian Malaise from the fish hatchery met her in the Lansing Kwik Trip, where she performed a quick field examination before bringing him home. Read through each photo to learn more - and thanks to Dr. Laura Johnson, Brian Malaise, and Tender Care Animal Hospital for supporting Dr. Laura's raptor rehabilitation work!
D32 has been transferred to SOAR and we're waiting to learn more from them.

Laura brought fluids and electrolytes and gave D32 a quick field exam in parking lot. He was weak, dehydrated, and possibly hypothermic. He was thin, but not emaciated. She administered fluids, electrolytes, and a glucose solution via a gavage tube, as shown here. The tube passes down the esophagus and directly into the stomach, which means fluids can be administered quickly, without the need to swallow.

Another look at Laura, D32, and Brian Malaise. I've been to this Kwik Trip many times, but never seen anything quite like this.

Once D32 was hydrated, Laura took him home and put him in her mews. This photo was taken right after he arrived. He was droopy and worn out. He received more fluids and she checked on him and assessed him throughout the night.

Cont.
When she thought he was ready, she put him on a perch as part of her assessment. Could he perch? He could, although he didn't stay on the perch long.
screenshot_45.jpg

He became more alert throughout the night and finally passed droppings at about three am. This was important, since he couldn't be fed until she knew his GI tract was working. Once he pooped, she fed him some tiny bits of venison. He was initially tentative, but quickly became interested in feeding. He was able to stand, feed, and even spent a little time with another eagle (not one of ours) that Laura was holding until it could be transferred.

ADDED
I cried a lot posting this.. watching D32 so helpless.. then seeing the love and caring of Dr. Laura Johnson and B Malaise .. brought happy tears .. their devotion to D 32 and all eagles is second to none... Keeping good thoughts and praying for D 32, D33 , DN9 and all eagles at SOAR! :rh: :rh:

Good Morning and Bonjour everyone. Thank you so much for all the updates and pictures. It was so nice to see Mom and DM2 hanging out together this morning. I feel so bad for them. They're probably missing their babies, but on the other hand I'm so glad their babies are in good hands along with other eagles.

Awwww. . . . D32 is so sweet . . . :rh:
Look at the wonderful professionals that took care of D32.
Even in the parking lot.
It looks like D32 was making good progress, perching, eating, PS.
Wings Crossed that D32 will make even more progress with SOAR. :luck:
Thank you so much for your posts and updates. :)
Thanks also to all the Eagle Eyes that watch over the nest & parents.
Bonjour Philjo :bye 1:
