Last seen Julliet Dec. 17 , 2018 // with thanks to NEFL END OF SEASON
RECAP
Following an apparent territorial fight as observed by Juliet’s injury (which had occurred days prior), Juliet was last seen at the nest on December 17, 2018

Romeo Dec. 26 , 2018 On December 25th one of the eggs hatched, but the hatchling was immediately taken by the same large female eagle, who likely equated the hatchling as food. The other egg was deemed non-viable. Left with an empty nest Romeo vacated on December 26 and was not seen thereafter, as his nesting season was over.

Dec 25, 7:11 PM

ste_AEF (Admin): The AEF has some very sad news. Just a few minutes after 5 pm EST, on Christmas Day, just as little E20 was emerging from its shell, but with Romeo off the nest, the female visitor swooped down and killed the baby eagle. She then flew off with it. This is not the outcome we had hoped and prayed for, but one that we had feared. Our hearts go out to each and every viewer affected. Those who have watched our NEFL cameras through the years have been privileged to witness so many little eaglets grow into mighty

Dec 25, 7:11 PM
ste_AEF (Admin): eagles in this nest — faithfully cared for by Romeo & Juliet. With Juliet gone, we knew that this season would not be like any of the others we have witnessed, but we prayed and hoped for a miracle. We pray that Juliet is still out there somewhere and that in time she and Romeo will reunite once again. Thanks to every one of you who have shared messages of hope and encouragement with us and with each other. We are all kindred spirits, and this tragedy has hit hard. Fly free, little NE20.

This is very interesting

In chat this morning, someone asked if the moss our eagles bring into the nest, grows on the ground. This is an explanation of the "air" plants which grow in the region. https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep485

grt_AEF (Moderator): One last post, the question this morning was how much power is in an eagles beak. The beak is used for tearing food, the power is in the leg muscles of the eagle.

No Cams Yet !

From cam chat
We hope you have enjoyed the off-season activities with the various Hamlet visitors. We look forward to Romeo and Juliet's return home. Last year Romeo returned on Aug 26 & Juliet followed on Aug 27, so it won't be long. Your prayers for their safe return are welcome!

Aug 26, 3:29 PM
gretchen_AEF (Admin): Romeo returned last year on this date. Juliet returned Aug 27. We have confirmed a soaring eagle in the distance by cam. Could it be Romeo or Juliet? Very possible. We will wait their arrival. Good catch, jd_AEF! Ground crew has been checking frequent perching areas. Stay tuned!
