Good Morning and Bonjour, I feel so bad for them with all those bugs, Philjo. Thank you for your pictures. This is a feeding from this morning. DN8 had to wait awhile but finally got into the front for some food.

Hi Mary. Sorry about the little eaglet. I just took a look at roll back. Little one is deceased and the nest and little ones are infested with bugs. They are all over the nest and the parent too. So sorry to see this.

Oh no Mary! I am so very sorry to see this happen at this nest. This is truly heart breaking. It's so HOT there too. This might have played a factor in this as well.

Rita this is not even "my" nest. I took it up with joy at the miracle of the late second clutch after we finished our year at SWFEC where I'm a mod. I am just heartbroken for the eagles and all who love this nest--I'm just totally teary eyed watching this unfold!! :brknhrt: :cry1: Poor Philjo!!!

Maybe the extreme heat and the bugs were just too much for their tiny bodies.

Same here Mary. Watched it earlier when they had the first egg that didn't make it. Was very surprised at this second clutch. Do you know if we can post pics from the chat? Someone posted a beautiful one of the two little ones. Phillipe might like it to remember them.

I just copied this from the DNN chat--I believe this is what happened too.

Shelliott (Moderator): We are sorry to announce that both DN7 & DN8 perished today. RRP will make an official statement but we believe that it was most likely due to the severe gnat infestation which can clog airways. Heat may have been a secondary factor.

Oh, this is so sad. These little chicks were miracle chicks and to have both pass is just incredibly tragic. Hugs for Philjo, Elaine, Bev, Mary, Nano, Rita and all who have watched, rejoiced and now cried for this nest.

It surely has been a day of heartbreak and thank you to everyone for sharing it with us. Eagle friends are the best friends. Thank you Rita for sharing the beautiful picture of DN7 and DN8. Thank you Mary for the information. Those gnats and the heat were terrible.

Aww, dang so sad to see that this happened. :cryhanky: Those gnats and files seem to be a real problem this year.
I got an email alert that they are even having problems in poultry with chicken farms being affected too. It gave some details about how to help keep my flock from some of these issues, but that doesn't help the eagles of course.
Since a lot of nests have older eaglets they can somewhat keep them at bay. I suspect that the Trio Eaglet left the nest early for the same reason.

Hugs to all that watch this nest. :grhug:

A new message from chat mod shelliott ---

Shelliott (Moderator): Our deepest sympathies to our North Nestie Family here at Explore. Nothing can take away our sadness but there is shared strength as we struggle through our sorrow together remembering all the joy we've experienced the past week with DN7 & DN8 and the many examples of devotion and determination by Mr & Mrs North caring for their eaglets. The final scene played out this morning as we saw Mrs North come in to retrieve her chicks and place them to the side of the nest while Mr North did a direct flyover.

..

From RRP ---

Raptor Resource Project

We are sorry to announce that both eaglets at the Decorah North nest died yesterday. To recap: Mrs. North laid one egg on February 25. That egg broke on March 16th, but she reclutched on April 12th, laying one egg on the 12th and another egg on the 15th. DN7 hatched on May 18th and DN8 hatched on May 20th.

Why did the eaglets die? As we learned last year at Great Spirit Bluff, blackflies carry a pathogen that overwhelms the immune systems of young birds. Today's blackfly strike, combined with the extreme heat and humidity, was more than the eaglets could take. The North reclutch was inspirational, but we all worried that the late hatch might negatively affect the eaglets - and it did. As John pointed out, what happened at the North nest shows how important the hatch window is in the larger picture. Insect hatches that overlap the vulnerable developmental stages of eagles and falcons can have devastating effects.

Even knowing that our eagles are truly wild, it is really hard and unfair to watch them seemingly succeed, only for their eaglets to perish. Sherri expressed what all of us are feeling when she wrote: "We were given a miracle gift and got to know two eaglets who showed us their fierce and feisty nature for seven and five days...that is what I will hold onto, and the determination and dedication of these parents." Both parents did their very best to shelter their eaglets from the gnats and the weather. We will continue to love and cherish our eagles and falcons, collect information to help us understand the challenges they face, and act on their behalf. Goodbye, DN7 and DN8 - it was wonderful to know you.
