Decorah North (Iowa) - 2017/18

Post by MaryF » Wed Feb 28, 2018 4:37 pm

HWF would like to welcome RRP's Decorah North Nest to our large family of bald eagle nests. This is year 3 for the cam but is the second season for them here on our forum. :hi:

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL DECORAH NEST WHICH HAS IT'S OWN THREAD ON THE FORUM

Decorah North’ is a very large bald eagle’s nest in a secluded valley north of Decorah. The Decorah North eagles are nesting on private property north of Decorah. Their very large nest is located in a white oak tree in a scrap of forest bordering a valley and an excellent stream is located just across a field where cattle are pastured. We don’t yet know their nesting chronology, although it appears to be somewhat later than their ‘neighbors’ in Decorah. The eagles eat live and dead fish, squirrels, other birds, rabbit, muskrat, deer, possum and anything else they can catch or find.

A few facts about the nest ~~~

*The nest is 56 feet off the ground

*It is nine feet long at its longest point

*It is seven feet wide at its widest point

*It has a total area of 49 feet

•It is about 5.5 feet high

•The eagles began building it in 2013 so this will be their third year using the nest.

*Using the method listed here (http://goo.gl/WajKSb), The nest’s weight was roughly estimated to be roughly 1700 pounds (using 37 pounds per cubic foot for wood weight). Good thing it is located in a sturdy white oak tree!

A quick note from RRP: The nest is located on private property and can’t be seen from the road. We are asking everyone to respect the landowner’s privacy (and cattle) and refrain from visiting the nest in person. Thank you.

Nest History

Link to last season's thread -- http://www.hancockwildlife.org/forum/vi ... 216#913216

We know very little about the adults here, although they are both sexually mature bald eagles and older than five years of age

We don't know too much about this nest as it is still fairly new. We do know that the nest we are watching now is the third nest built on this territory in seven oreight years. We don’t know whether the same pair of eagles have been here all along.

The first nest (DNN0) was built in a pine tree. The branches collapsed after the second nesting season and the eagles moved to a dead elm tree. They nested there for just one year before moving to their current location, in a white oak tree, in late 2013. 2018 will mark their fifth season in the Decorah north Nest.

We do know a lot about the 2015/16 nesting season at this nest---the first with a cam on the nest. It was a very sad and unusual year for this pair.

DNN another 3 2016.jpg
-- the three 2016 chicks -- how cute is the tiny one!?

A quick summary of the 2015/16 season --

2016 – DN1, DN2, DN3

3 eggs hatched.

DN3 died of cold and malnourishment on May 11. Sibling
aggression was a significant factor.

***Little DN6 passed away on April 4th at 2 days old. :cry1: See this post forum/viewtopic.php?topic=957932#957932

DN2 was killed by contaminated prey on May 25th.

DN1 survived to fledge.

A little more detail on the 2016 season --

Nesting Record

Egg #1: 3/11/16 @ 2:29 PM CT
Egg #2: 3/14/16 @ 2:28 PM CT
Egg #3: 3/18/16 @ 8:41 AM CT

Hatch #1: 4/17/16 @ 1:19AM CT
Hatch #2: 4/19/16 @ time unknown. Shell discarded at 4:19am
Hatch #3: 4/23/16 @ 9:14AM CT

DN3 died on May 11th from a combination of lack of brooding, lack of food, and sibling aggression. Blog here: http://bit.ly/1NrEDnt

DN2 died on May 25th after consuming contaminated prey. Blog here: http://bit.ly/29Ve1d5

***Mom North became very ill from the contaminated food as well but fortunately she was able to recover and continue to raise the third and only eaglet to survive.

DN1 fledged on 7/9/16 @ 6:30AM CT.

All three eggs did hatch in 2017. Unfortunately the youngest died from hypothermia at only one day old. They named him Dewy

There are some that think this was a male intruder and not Dad North. I am hoping that is not the case. Also her second egg seems well overdue at this point. There is a you tube video of the "intruder" actually rolling the egg before Mom covers it back up. The interaction between the two plus the delayed second egg makes me wonder if this isn't Dad North.
