Stalashen Bald Eagle Nest, Sechelt, Sunshine Coast BC 2017 - 2018 Season

Post by Marg » Thu Feb 22, 2018 3:14 pm

Welcome to the 2017- 2018 Season!

Welcome to this thread. If you visit the Stalashen nest in Sechelt you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

Earl & I have been watching this nest in Sechelt from our living room, through a telescope and binoculars. The nest is located at the corner of Stalashen Drive and Titalshen Avenue. We have been following this nest since 2008. When we first started reporting on the nest we had talked to a few of the people living close to the nest and they said that it has been there over 20 years. Unfortunately, it did blow down in July 2009 after a windstorm but we are happy to tell you that the eagles built a new nest. When the nest blew down one of the eaglets had branched and the 2nd one was fine also, the eagles fed them on a branch before they fledged. We look through our telescope at this nest which is about a mile and a half away. We can only see them clearly in the morning or evening due to the glare from the water and thermal interference.

Added July 16, 2017. Sandra was told by neighbours that this nest is 50 yrs. old (could even be older than that even) when his wife moved there she was 1 she's now 51.

2009 - 2 eaglets not named. Fledged.
2010 - 1 eaglet Sunny. Fledged.
2011 - 1 eaglet Bluster June 21 Bluster branched. Fledged.
2012 - 1 eaglet Pacer June 27 Pacer branched. Fledged.
2013 - 1 eaglet Hydan June branched. Fledged.
2014 - 2 eaglets branched ..... Fledged July 16.
2014 - Sep 28, 5:50pm Ma/Pa Stalashen back!
2015 - 2 eaglets branched.......Fledged
2015 - Sep 30 Ma/Pa returned.
2016 - 1 eaglet, Orel fledged June 28.
2016 - Sep 19 one eagle returned.
2017 - Two eaglets branched one fledged June 30 2017 the other one a few days later.
2017 - Oct. 1 Ma or Pa returned.
At the beginning of this season we thought that there were 2 eaglets in this nest but on May 19 we could only see one eaglet through the telescope. We don't know what happened but what was believed to be an eagle wing was found on the ground by two of our members Karen H and Aspen. Karen H stated "At the time we didn't know if it was from the missing eaglet or another bird". As stated on the thread I contacted Gibsons Wildlife but they had not had any report of an eaglet found on the ground.

Good morning everyone!
I took this pic around 6:30am through the telescope (best I can do at this time of day). Ma/Pa Stalashen are perched on a branch to the left of the nest tree. They are still there at 7:36am

Through the telescope: we see Ma and Pa in and around the nest more now so suspect there is an egg but cannot see into the nest as we have no cam here. Another sign is the presence of a number of crows buzzing the eagles.

I've been thinking it's about time to check on our nests for brooding! Soon I hope to be out there on a bright sunny day.

I visited our Stalashen nest last Wed, March 7. Only 1 adult was found, standing in the nest. I think it was Pa. No sign of one down low brooding.

Hello everyone who checks this nest.
It's been a very windy day here lots of whitecaps on the water, the nest tree was swaying a lot but Ma or Pa remained down in the nest brooding. We even had some hail but it didn't last long.

Exciting news Marg to hear that Ma and Pa are brooding. :)

Fingers crossed that the weather improves soon so that they don't get too wet!

Yesterday, we were at Mission Point Park and were talking to someone who lives close to the Stalashen nest and she was happy to confirm that Ma is incubating. :) She also said that she thought that one of the eagles was poisoned a few months ago but I don't remember whether it was Ma or Pa? Earl believes she said that it was a new Male and was smaller. :cry1: :dunno: One of our Hancock Forum members also heard that one was poisoned a little while ago. When I hear back from her I will let you know whether it was Ma or Pa.

The eagle found who may have been poisoned was indeed a male and the suspicion is that the nesting male here is new. Our friend Karen found the grounded eagle who passed away at OWL after being rescued by Clint from our local rehab. Then Karen was told and shared her story about rat poison being put down near where the male eagle was found and being told about a new male with Ma. So yes, the consensus seems to be that the new eagle is our new Pa.
I wasn't sure that nesting would occur here this year but am thrilled with your reports Marg and my pictures of a white head low in the nest taken from the road March 28, east side of the nest.

Thanks Sandra we thought that it was the male so you are correct in saying that we have a new Pa!

We have watched them incubating through our telescope since the first part of March. We have a better view from up here rather than down lower viewing the nest especially when they are low down. :D

I looked this evening about 7:16pm and was surprised to see Ma/Pa perched on the side branch it was a shift change, I'd hoped to spot this and was lucky. By the time I got my camera to take a picture Ma was low down in the nest and just Pa was on the branch. :)

I'm just catching up on the new forum and reading through local threads, this being the first one !

So glad to read that there is incubating happening at the nest.

It was a male I found last fall in the brush underneath their perch tree at the complex and sadly after being cared for by Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Centre and OWL he passed away just over a week later. There were no broken bones, no lead poisoning and nothing showing up on x-rays to show cause of death but after talking to a woman to lives at the complex and telling me about rat poison being put out by residents (which she has been working hard to stop) it does appear that the Stalashen male may have been inadvertently poisoned :(

Hi Mushka good to see you and thanks for your post. It is very sad that rat poison is still being used! I was thrilled to see the swap over it is hard when there's no camera to witness this. :)

I was looking through the telescope at 4:51pm and saw something that I'd never witnessed before. One eagle was perched on the branch to the left one in the nest and it looked like the one in the nest was eating, after about half a minute it flew out of the nest and knocked the other eagle off the branch then flew back into the nest and settled down. :dunno: All quiet there now maybe it wanted more food? I thought I would see a shift change......

Through the telescope:
We were out all day yesterday but about 6:55pm Earl saw one eagle on the perch tree at the top and one was in the nest, at 7:20pm he looked again and there was just one in the nest I guess this new Pa is using some of the branches and the old nest tree like the previous Pa.

This morning at around 10a.m. I saw the eagle that was incubating in the nest fly out and about 30 seconds later an eagle flew into the nest, perhaps a shift change?
