Henderson Bald Eagles, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2019-2022 Seasons
Re: Henderson Bald Eagles, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2019/2020 Season
Oh my, I also think they could be from an eaglet. Or perhaps Canada Goose? We need options here before we give up on our eaglets. Your whole story though from the eaglets out of the nest, lower in trees, to this could all go together. At the Marsh a couple of years ago I found feathers like these, took the best to Maureen to ask about the eaglets. They were fine, the feathers came from a Canada Goose.
Re: Henderson Bald Eagles, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2019/2020 Season
That's definitely a possibility Sandra, I never thought of a Canada Goose but the colouring is similar so maybe that's where all the feathers came from. Let's hope for the best for the eaglet(s); not that I want to see a Canada Goose lose it's mate but would be nice if the eaglets did have a chance. It's just so quiet eagle wise when I've been there, not a peep. But, could just be time of day, etc.

Oooh - thats worrying. But I agree that there's a good chance they are Goose feathers. They just look too pale to be eaglets.
I hope for good news on your next visit Karen

Visiting the Olave nest on July 2 I looked across and saw 1 adult top middle in this image. Hopefully that means that the adults are still claiming this territory and will be back next season to try again

Re: Henderson Bald Eagles, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2020/2021 Season
I visited the OIave nest last Saturday (Mar 27) and when I looked across to the Henderson nest I could just about see one adult perched at the top of one of their favourite trees near the nest tree. Hopefully this means Ma and Pa will try again so fingers crossed for this season
I have some pics that I will add when I have uploaded them

I visited the OIave nest On Apr 10 and as usual looked across to the Henderson nest. I could see one adult perched at the top of one of their favourite trees near the nest tree. SO Ma and Pa are sticking around the area. Still keeping my fingers crossed for this season.

I visited the OIave nest on May 8 and when I looked across to the Henderson nest I could see 2 adults perched nearby on different trees near the nest tree. Hopefully this means Ma and Pa have some eaglets to take care of

That sounds very promising Heather! Thank you! I intend to try taking the path down to the Olave side of the nest one day. Hope the ground is fairly steady.
Re: Henderson Bald Eagles, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2020/2021 Season
Finally stopped in at the nest today, I couldn't see any activity in the nest from the spot on the beach in front of the house that Lura and Bert used to live in so started walking along the beach, while I was walking an adult flew in followed by several gulls and disappeared into the trees towards the nest tree and I could hear a youngster calling and calling. I walked around the corner to the spot where you can look back and see the nest tree and saw movement in the nest followed by the appearance of an eaglet. Yay! I didn't want to stand in that spot too long as it is in front of houses so walked back hoping to see the eaglet from the other view point, but couldn't. I then went up onto Beach Ave and the view spot in the first driveway, but again couldn't see anything. But, at least did see evidence of at least one eaglet in the nest.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Matching Drive
A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.
We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.
And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.
With that in mind....
We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.
The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!
