Henderson Nest, Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2018/2019 Season

Post by heatherj » Wed Oct 03, 2018 9:46 pm

Welcome to the Henderson Nest thread for the 2018/2019 Season.

If you visit the Henderson nest in Roberts Creek you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

This nest was new to the forum in May 2016 though it has been active for several seasons before that. The nest is on private property but can be viewed from the beach. To view the nest, walk on to the beach from the Henderson & Beach Ave pull-out. Nest is visible to the west over 2nd house on the tree with severely broken top
  • 2015/16 - 1 eaglet Henderson, fledged on or before July 7
  • 2016/17 - 2 eaglets seen. 1 successful fledge on or before July 14. Sadly 1 eaglet was lost sometime in June. It may have been a fall from the nest or predation
  • 2017/18 - Adults seen in and around the nest but no evidence of any eaglets. Thread here
  • 2018/19 - :luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks Marg!

I was down at the Olave nest today and when I looked across I could see 2 adults at the Henderson nest tree. So looks like the Hendersons are back too! :)

Thank you Heather for opening this thread and reporting your sighting from Camp Olave! I love how you can do that.
I got to visit our Hendersons on Monday the 18th. We arrived to find both in the nest, looking like a changing of the guard as one was down in brooding position and the other upright. :D I'm not sure if that was Ma or Pa, flew to Ma's perch tree and looked like it must have taken a piece of food from the nest. Eating behaviour went on.
Both in nest.

Thanks Sandra. Wonderful to hear that Ma and Pa appear to be sitting on eggs. Fingers crossed for a successful season :)

I stopped by the nest last Sunday (May 5th) and standing at the top of the first driveway on Marine Ave. was able to see what appeared to be a shift change, when I first arrived I couldn't see anything but when the breeze moved the greenery was able to see a head in the nest. I watched for about 10 minutes and then out of nowhere the second adult flew in. Within seconds the adult that was originally in the nest, I'm assuming, went to the far edge of the nest and flew off. From the time the second adult flew in and the first one left was literally seconds. Guess someone was in a hurry to go :-) I then walked along the beach to see if I could see anything further from that angle but couldn't. But was happy to see activity at the nest, this was around 10 am.

Second adult settling into the nest, can just see the tips of the wings through the greenery

Stopped by the nest this morning, I didn't see any adults around but could hear a youngster calling from the nest even though I couldn't see one. So decided to wait a bit, stood on the beach and looked for whales, adult eagles and ducks . . . didn't see any whales or adult eagles but did see two harlequin ducks swimming by out a ways.

After checking the nest off and on while I stood on the beach I finally saw some movement, first a head appeared, then a rather large eaglet who proceeded to move to the other side of the nest and out of sight behind the greenery / branches. But for a brief few seconds an eaglet did make an appearance :-)
