Field Rd Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast BC - 2018/2019 season

Post by heatherj » Wed Oct 03, 2018 9:25 pm

Welcome to the Field Rd nest thread for the 2018/2019 Season.

If you visit the Field Rd nest in Wilson Creek on the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

This nest was new to the forum in 2016 though the nest has been occupied at least since 2011 and probably a lot longer. The nest is in a big Douglas Fir on private property and any views from public property are from quite a distance or would require bushwacking through scrub. However from our property we have a peek-a-boo view of the back of the nest and as we have quite a few big trees around us we're quite well placed for observations of the activities of the adults and juveniles throughout the year. The pictures may not always be great but hopefully they'll be interesting!!

The nest is in the riparian area of Husdon Creek at the back of a big vacant lot on upper Field Rd. The nest tree can be seen from Field Rd but I haven't been able to see the actual nest as its hidden by foliage. The nest tree is a tall tree with a bent top circled in the picture below. Adult eagles can sometimes be seen sitting in the trees along Field Rd - I'm sure some of them are this couple.

:woohoo: I saw one adult yesterday, possibly Pa, perched at the top of their favourite tree near the nest. Pics arfe from Oct 2 and Oct 4. I think they might be of the same eagle but its hard to say for sure

And this morning I heard 1 and possibly 2 eagles calling from the nest but it was too dark to see anything. So welcome back!!

It seems earlier than last year but I can't get to the old forum to check their return date last Fall.

I saw one adult eagle last week that seemed to be harassing some ravens not far from the eagle nest. The eagle flew off in the direction of the Field Rd nest but I lost it in the trees.

Then this evening I heard 2 eagles calling to each other from the direction of the Wilson Creek nest. Soon after one flew back towards the Field Rd nest so perhaps it was a boundary reminder conversation with the Wilsons?

I will look out for activity over the next few days to confirm that they are both back. :)

Thanks for opening the thread for this season Heather. Happy to hear that you are seeing some of your eagles. :)
I also couldn't get in to the old season I'll report it.

I saw two adult eagles swirling around yesterday morning .... so they might both be back but I haven't seen them sitting together to be absolutely sure. :D

On Oct 12, I saw an adult flying overhead. Perhaps Pa this time as this eagle had a much smoother head? This eagle also appeared to have a very visible claw - see zoomed in image. I don't think I've seen a claw appearing like that before, normally the claws are neatly curled in. Perhaps an injury?

All through October I saw only 1 adult at a time though I suspected that there were 2 from the calls I heard. But then on Oct 31 I finally saw 2 together :) Although sadly it was just the backs of their heads!

In November, I saw both adults intermittently plus an occasional fly over by a juvenile

In December, I usually saw single adults including one spending lots of time at the east border of the territory which is a bit unusual compared to behaviour from previous years. S/he chose to perch one morning in front of a particularly beautiful sunrise.

The nest looks as though some extra sticks have been added.

In Jan I had my first sighting of an adult in the nest though I think s/he was too high to be brooding

This looks like Pa perched on a favourite tree near the nest

Also a few juveniles came to visit

On Jan 26 there was a large gathering of eagles on the Field Rd side late in the afternoon, around 5pm. I think there were more than in these pics as I could see them flying behind the trees.

In Feb, we had some snow but Ma and Pa stayed around to guard their territory with a beautiful flying display on Feb 3

Here is an extreme crop of one of the previous pictures from Feb 3 to show that the adult still has that strange talon on his/her right foot
