Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2018/2019 season

Post by heatherj » Wed Oct 03, 2018 8:58 pm

Welcome to the Camp Olave nest thread for the 2018/2019 season. Old forum thread for 2017/2018 here

If you visit the nest you are welcome to post comments and/or pictures here. The nest is located in Wilson Creek on the Sunshine Coast BC, just north of Vancouver. The nest tree is on private property (Camp Olave - Girl Guides camp) but the nest is visible from the beach in front of the camp. This beach is accessible only at low tide unless you have access through the Camp.

This nest was new to the forum in 2016/2017 but I believe that a pair of eagles has been in residence in this territory for quite some time. I have been watching them since 2011 and have seen adults and juveniles in the territory each year. Then in March 2016 I was excited to find their nest. I watched the nest throughout the season but sadly the nest collapsed sometime in April, May or June. I don't know if the chick(s) survived but I did see a juvenile with the adults later in the summer so I'm hopeful. The eagles built a nest in a different tree for the 2016/2017 season and this time had more success with definitely one and possibly two successful fledges . The nest did collapse again though this time much later in the season - I did see both eaglets after the nest collapse but was only able to confirm 1 successful fledge. I will be looking out for the location of the nest this year and hopefully the return of two eaglets. :)

This pair are neighbours to the Hendersons and the Brownings
  • 2015/16 - Nest collapsed in early summer but possibly 1 eaglet fledged
  • 2016/17 - 2 eaglets seen in the nest. Nest collapsed sometime between July 31 and Aug 5. Definitely 1 successful fledge on or before Aug 14. No details on whether the second eaglet fledged.
  • 2017/18 - 2 eaglets seen in the nest. Nest collapsed sometime between June 22 and July 9. 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 20. Second eaglet possibly fledged on or before Aug 7
  • 2018/19 - 2 eaglets, successfully fledged on or before July 29

My apologies for not posting on this thread for a while but I have been visiting through the winter so her are my catch up observations!

I visited on Nov 11 and saw one adult enjoying the early morning sunshine. No activity on the nest - still collapsed from the endo fo last season. While I was there I saw flybys from 2 juveniles.

I visited a few times in December but only ever saw one adult at a time. Still no apparent rebuilding of the nest

I visited several times in January and still saw only one adult at a time until Jan 31 when for the first time I saw two adults together :) And they mated while I was there! And in front of the kids sitting a bit further down the beach!

But still no obvious activity on rebuilding the nest

My most recent visit was on Mar 18 and I saw that they had decided to rebuild the nest in the same spot! I was hoping they would so that I didn't have to try to find the new one!

On my visit I saw 1 adult and 1 juvenile perched on separate trees but near the nest tree

I visited on Apr 1 and though the tides were a bit high so I wasn't able to get close to the nest but from a distance I could see one adult sitting in a tree near the nest.

Not great light so not a great pic but enough to show that there was still activity around the nest :)

The tides have been against me until a few days ago when I was able to visit on May 2nd. And there was a lot going on at this nest! :)

I could see one adult, I think Ma, sitting on the nest. I wasn't able to get a good view of her face as she was sitting behind one of the big branches but I could just see her tail. She seemed quite high so perhaps there are some young ones? Fingers crossed!

All was quiet at the nest so I turned to watch the gulls as they were feeding in the shallows. One gull caught a crab which another immediately tried to take away. Though it seemed in the end they decided to share it!

But this is just the setup for what happened next ....!

Suddenly all the gulls took off and flew away fro the beach. The two gulls I had been watching each tried to grab bits of their crab but some bits were left behind.

The gulls had scattered as Pa had been perched above near the nest and he had been watching the argument over the crab. He decided to fly down to take it from the gulls. He was able to get most of it, though one piece fell away. I'm sure the gulls would come back for that later!

He carried the crab bits up to the nest and dropped them in front of Ma

Pa didn't stay long and very soon Pa flew off screeching very loudly, flying right over my head. Ma stayed on the nest and didn't look that impressed with Pa's efforts! I didn't see her feed herself or feed any youngsters with the crab.

Pa immediately flew to a nearby tree and started surveying the area probably hoping for another chance to find a meal.

It all happened very quickly but it was definitely a very exciting few minutes :)
