Saanichton Bay Eagles, Central Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
Welcome to the Saanichton Bay Eagles thread for the 2018/2019 season. There was a nest across the bay for many years but it fell down a few years ago. I was advised by a resident in the area earlier this year that the eagles had built a new nest in a tree near Saanichton Bay Park. I visited the nest site earlier in the season and indeed found the new nest with 2 beautiful active eaglets! These 2 eaglets successfully fledged in the summer.
Please feel free to post your observations and photos of these eagles when you visit their nest area.

Re: Saanichton Bay Eagles, Central Saanich BC - 2018/2019 Season
I did a tour of the nests on the peninsula yesterday. The eagles were hunting and fishing out in the bay They were flying around the bay, then perching on the trees on shore, going back and forth for almost an hour. The first one was spotted perched on top of an old barge out in the bay. It flew across to the rocky area near the site of their old nest as the end of James Island Rd. and circled around scaring the gulls and ducks. Then the other eagle flew in from across the bay and repeated what the other one had done. I took some photos from the path in the park area then we headed over to the wharf at the end of James Island Rd. All of the following photos are in the order they were taken.

I visited the nest area and the bay yesterday and spotted the eagles perched in the same tree, across the inlet from the nest site. This first photo was taken from the dock at the end of James Island Road and has been cropped a lot.
These next 2 photos were taken from the beach behind the condo where the nest tree is.
By the time we got there from the wharf they had moved to separate trees.

I managed to get 1 decent photo of one of the eagles flying across the bay, chasing a seagull.
The next few minutes were hectic, with both of the eagles flying around and landing in the trees.
The quality isn't the greatest as I was looking into the sun.
Both landing in the same tree.

I did a tour of the nests on the peninsula yesterday. There were no eagles seen or heard
around the nest area. The photo is poor quality as it was very overcast and late in the day.
We did see one of the eagles (looked like the male) sitting on the wharf out in the bay.
They quite often sit there watching for prey.

I visited the nest area yesterday and didn't see or hear any eagles in the area. I spoke to one of the neighbours who can look over the road right into the nest and he said one of the eagles has been there a few times fixing up the nest

On May 15th my birding partner visited the nest site and saw one adult eagle in the nest.
I visited the nest area on June 12th and saw one of the adults perched above the nest. She eventually flew off and we spotted her perched in a tree across the bay. We observed the nest from several vantage points and were sure there is at least one eaglet and possibly two in the nest.

On June 19th my birding partner saw one eaglet sitting up in the nest, and an adult perched in the nest tree. The adult later flew off towards the ocean.
On June 24th my birding partner saw an adult sittting on a branch by the nest with one eaglet. The adult flew off and came back with either a lump of grass or prey and left it in the nest. The adult then flew off to a nearby tree and the eaglet poked at the lump which turned out to be grass.
I visited the nest area this afternoon and saw the lone eaglet sitting up in the nest.
This one was taken from the sidewalk across from the nest tree.
This one was taken from the park on the other side of the nest tree.
While I was down at the end of the path an adult flew in and perched beside the nest.
