History of the Nest

There have been eagles in this territory in Delta, British Columbia, not far from the Tsawwassen Ferry, since at least the late 1990s. They initially took over and rebuilt a red tail hawk nest, then nested on high tension power poles for a few years, then moved back to the nest in 2010 and successfully raised two eaglets. A camera was installed for 2011.

There are other eagle pairs nesting nearby – and the cameras are powerful enough, and the “zoomers” who control them are skilled enough, that we can not only see the resident pair perched on towers guarding their territory – we can sometimes see the neighbours on a further pole, near where the territories meet.

2011.........2 eaglets raised.........Oreo and Jet. Oreo fell or was blown from the nest and was rescued and taken to O.W.L. as he couldn't be safely returned to the nest. Jet fledged.

2012..........2 eaglets raised..........Goldwing and Linux. Goldwing did not survive and Linux needed some rescue help from OWL but did fledge afterwards.

2013........2 eggs laid, but only one hatched.........Tux. Tux fledged successfully.

2014.......Feb, 8, 2014...........Ma severely injured her left leg, possibly broke it. Ma still laid 2 eggs that year and 2 eaglets did fledge.........Ariel and Hunter.

2015..........2 eggs laid..........none hatched as our adults were frequently off the nest.......something likely disturbed them that year..........A summer storm happened overnight on August 28th/29th, 2015 while our adults were away on their migration. It completely snapped the nest tree and the nest fell to the ground. A starter nest was built in the tree we had been calling the Barn Tree. This nest was accepted by Ma and Pa when they returned from their migration and life carried on using the newly constructed nest.

2016..........2 eggs laid.....both hatched.............Ace and Pippin. Sadly, Pippin became ill and passed away. Ace successfully fledged.

2017..........2 eaglets raised........Spirit and Jewel. Both fledged successfully.

2018........Sad turn of events this year. Pa went missing on June 1, 2018 and was not seen after that. Ma struggled with other adult and sub adult eagles to maintain control of her nest which had 2 chicks on it at this time. When Pa disappeared they were just over 7 weeks old. They were Dusk and Dawn. Both eaglets did fledge successfully as Ma befriended a male during this time. This male became known as Trooper.

2019........Trooper returned in the Fall to become the new male on the nest, Ma's mate. They raised 2 eaglets, Bella and Coola. Both did well with a successful fledge for them both.

2020.........Ma laid 3 eggs this year. Only 2 hatched. Sunny, the eldest chick, slipped from a branch @81 days of age..........was seen that night by searchers but no sign of him after that. Shadow accidentally fledged @83 days of age.......a successful fledge, he was around for a couple of weeks afterwards.

2021...........Ma again laid 3 eggs, only 2 hatched. Both eaglets, Hope and Chase fledged successfully.

2022............Trooper disappeared February 8, 2022. Ma laid no eggs this year. Her efforts were spent in guarding her territory and accepting a new mate which she seemed to have done by season's end. He was named DM (Delta Male) at least temporarily. Ma reinjured her left left leg, noticed on June 13, 2022. She had a significant limp for the remainder of the season. The nest tree disintegrated during the year as weather and time took its toll. The WEST cam fell to the ground, the EAST cam became loose and gave a slanted view, going offline in August. Funds were raised through GoFundMe and a new nest was built for Ma to greet Ma upon her return from her migration in the Fall. 2 new cams were also installed.

2023............Ma and DM rejected the new nest pole built for them near the Old Nest Tree. Instead they built a new one from scratch at the Centre Tower. We believe Ma laid an egg(s) in their new nest sometime around March 13th. The exact hatch date is not known but a ground visit to the nest on June 27 verified that there was at least one healthy eaglet on Ma's/DM's nest. An additional ground visit on Aug 4 revealed the eaglet sitting on top of Centre Tower (with the nest being below). It was unclear if this was a branching or if they had already fledged. Regardless of which it was, they must have fledged soon after.

OUR 2 NEW CAMS:

HNP322-OD/32X - Microsoft Edge

Delta East
Delta West

These cams are similar to HikVision but (I believe) marketed by a different company; they are not similar to the Vivotek cams we are most familiar with - it seems that Vivotek is no longer making cams with domes, and we consider having the cam movement not visible to the eagles is a priority, so switched to these cams which appear to have domes.

TIMELINE 2022 - 2023

Eagles return to territory:
Oct 20/2022, two adult eagles were seen in Ma’s territory at the First Tower. Likely Ma and DM but it couldn’t be verified as they didn’t come to the new nest. It was decided we should delay opening the new thread for this reason.
Eagles first visit to new nest:
Dec 26/2022, Ma was seen in the new nest for the first time AND she brought food to eat there.
DM (we believe) perched above the nest on the same day.

Eggs Laid:
It cannot be verified that Ma and her mate have laid eggs as they are not using the new nest; they have a nest they built from scratch at Centre Tower. However, after daily observation on the cams we noticed a change in their routines around Mar. 13.This along with a ground visit on Mar. 28 leads us to believe they probably have eggs in their new tower nest and laid them around Mar 13/14.

Pip observed:

Chicks hatched:
The hatch date cannot be verified as the nest is not viewable from our nest cam(s). A ground visit to the nest was required to verify there were any eaglets. This was done on June 27. One eaglet was then viewable on the nest.

First Branching:
Aug 4 - A ground visit revealed the eaglet sitting on top of Centre Tower (with the nest being below). It was unclear if this was a branching (they jumped there) or if they had already fledged.

Fledge Dates:

Adults last seen: (before summer migration)
Ma last seen - Aug 8/2023
DM last seen - Aug 8/2023

Interesting/Unusual Events or visits:

Visits from Ma and DM to the new nest have been few and far between. Ma has visited the nest on a number of occasions since the beginning of the year; in each instance she brought food with her to eat on the nest. DM may have visited once as well on Mar 8 (not verified).

Nest Cams:
Apr 20 the East Zoomer cam stopped working. It flickered back on briefly on a couple of occasions in the following week or so, but the connection never lasted. Since then we have only been able to zoom/observe the area with the West cam. The West cam is faster but doesn't see as many of our pairs' favourite perching spots on towers and poles within Ma's territory. Subsequently, sightings of Ma and DM have decreased considerably since Apr 20.

HOW TO IDENTIFY THE ADULTS...........Comparing Ma with New Male

Ma's voice is distinctive. Sort of a throaty/croaky call. Different than DM's. She has a smooth back collar and roundish head. A large notch has been noted on her front collar but it isn't always visible. Ma has eye dots in her R eye but they are rarely seen.

DM's most noticeable feature is eye dots in both eyes. Very dark spots, and large enough to see. He also has at this time some dark bits of feathers in his tail. That will likely change as he ages. His collar, front and back is a bit more jagged than Ma's.

HOW TO IDENTIFY MA

Eye dots are one permanent marker to ID an eagle. They do not change
.
Ma's eye dots are very difficult to see.

NEIGHBOURING EAGLE NESTS.

There are many neighbouring eagle territories but we cannot see all of their nests with our cams. As well, we have new cams attached to a new nest at a new location (since Sept 2022) therefore our views are a little different from previous years. Currently, we can see the Tower eagles (1) and the Field eagles (2).

1. The Tower Nest is home of the tower eagles, Ma’s nearest and dearest neighbours for years now. We can see their nest with both our EAST and WEST cams. We can usually tell once they've laid eggs (based on behaviour) and once their eaglets become large enough we can start to make them out with our cams.

This (below) is a view of their nest from the East cam. Unfortunately, we cannot zoom in more than this.

Jan2-Tower2.jpg
Tower Eagle News 2023:

It hasn't been easy to follow the events on the tower nest this year especially once the East cam stopped working. It has been a bit of a different year for them.

There was debate off an on whether they had one or two eaglets. Most likely they had two eaglets for awhile and one didn't make it to fledge.
May 7 was the first sighting of an eaglet on their tower (still small) and on
May 10 there looked to be a second eaglet.

We lost one of our tower adults this year (not sure if it was the male or female).
June 9th - Approx. the last time both adults were seen was around. After this the other adult took over single-parent duties.

It's not clear when the 2nd eaglet was no longer viewable on the nest but we only ever observed one doing wingers, and in the end only one branched, then fledged.
July 27 - Eaglet branched onto the supports below the nest platform.
July 27 - At 9:03pm the eaglet fledged and returned to the nest immediately after.
Aug 9 - Last sighting of any tower eagle/eaglet... on their way for the summer.

2. The Field Nest is the home of the field eagles. If one looks to the left of the Evergreen pole (close to where the distant evergreen tree used to be), into the distance you can see a tall tower, with a pole close by. Adults have been observed perching on that tower or pole and it’s believed they nest in the tower. We can see this area with either the East or West cam now (in the past it was only viewable with the East cam).

TIPS FOR POSTING VIDEOS TO THE FORUM AND TO YOUTUBE:
(Thanks Sandy).

For a video post I am going to type out the instructions I copied a long time ago from a help thread on "How to Do Posh Links." There are two methods listed there but this is the one I use. I think Sue does too but she may have another way.

1. Copy the url address for the youtube link of the video uploaded to youtube.

2. Insert the "green camera" icon. Type in the post (left bracket) [url=

3. Paste the copied youtube url of the link after the =

4. Type ] (right bracket) at the end of the pasted link

5. Type the name of your video after the right bracket

6. After typing the name of the video, type in [/url]

7. Preview post to make sure the link works and the name is accurately displayed.

Here is an example providing an example of the icon and the string of instructions, plus a preview of the post.

1.JPG

To upload a video to YouTube:

I found this simple information from a google search. I don't have a video to upload so don't have screen shots for each of the steps. Basically, just go next, next and make sure you select "public" in one of the selections. I typically will choose my own thumbnail as it is processed. You can see this step in the processing window. There are two different links that has the same information but worded a bit differently.

Instructions:

Log in to your YouTube account.

Click on the video icon at the top right hand side of the window, which can be found next to your user icon, messages, apps, and notifications. Camera icon for dropdown to upload video.

2.JPG
2.JPG (13.83 KiB) Viewed 7373 times

Click ‘Upload Video.’

Then, press ‘select files to upload’ to find the video file saved on your computer. Or, you can drag and drop it into the window.

An optional step is to choose the privacy settings on your video (but more on that below). If you choose to stop after this, you will technically have achieved what this article is all about. Namely, your video will now be on YouTube. That said, it will be lacking a proper description and tags, which are crucial if you want your content to be found by the community of viewers.

Also, if you don’t change the name of your video, it will automatically be rocking the same file name as when you uploaded it from your computer. To avoid that (and to properly finalize the process), you’ll need to fill out the following sections:

Add an SEO friendly title (google search friendly) so that it’s more easily discoverable via search engines.

Add a description of the video so people know what your content is about before watching it.

Add tags, which act as tools to help the discovery of your video.

Another link with information to upload. Scroll down to see the information.
https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to- ... to-youtube

1. Navigate to YouTube in a web browser.

2. Make sure you are logged in. If you don't see your account avatar in the upper right corner, click "Sign In" and enter your Google account information.

3. Click the Create a video button at the top of the screen. It looks like a video camera. In the drop-down menu, click "Upload video."

4. The video upload page should appear. Under "Select files to upload," click "Public" and choose what level of visibility you want for the video — everyone can see a public video, but you can also make it unlisted (it's still publicly available, but only to people with a direct link), private (meaning only you have access), or Scheduled, which means it won't go live until a later date.

5. Click the large arrow to choose the video file, or you can simply drag the video file onto the page.

6. While the video uploads, you can enter information like the name and description of the video.

7. Click "Publish" to complete the process. You can publish the video while it's still uploading, or wait till the upload is complete. Either way, the video won't appear online unless you click "Publish."

Hope this helps,

Sandy

7:08 am - Happy New Year Everyone! I am logged into the cams. I took a quick look at the rollback but did not see anyone on the stick tree or previous nest tree. Hoping to see our adults once the sun begins to rise.

8:04 am - was looking out in the East field area and just as the cam got there an eagle flew off a distant tree and headed to the right...followed them as much as I could, in between branches, lost them though as they were approaching the Bluff eagle area. But....did come across an eagle on the flag pole. I didn't see them land so am assuming this is not the same one I was following. It's very foggy out this morning in Delta.....not sure we will see much activity until the fog lifts.
