I was able to capture some snippets of Ma and DM before Ma left on her migration. Here is a video of those few days.

Video Narrative:
Ma and Delta Male spent some time in the nest together prior to Ma leaving on her migration. She also gets a good rest in the nest the morning of July 25th. That same afternoon, Ma and DM were observed together at the first tower. Ma was last seen on July 25th and DM was last seen the morning of August 1st. Delta Male checked in periodically at the nest and kept watch over their territory after Ma left.

We wish both Ma and DM a safe passage on their migration and always have a full crop. Sending positive thoughts for Ma’s healing along with optimism she returns to Delta healthy in the fall. Stay safe Ma and DM.

Hope you enjoyed watching clips of Ma and DM during their final days of this nesting season. Thank you to David Hancock and the Hancock Wildlife Foundation for providing us with the privilege of following Ma and her journey as a magnificent and strong eagle.

9:15am.....Good morning Delta2 friends! Thanks Sandy for the video of Ma and DM! It is a great last look at this pair together. Sure hope he is the returning male in a few weeks, but every indication would lead us to believe he will be back with Ma!

Very warm today.

DELTA2 NEST SUMMARY 2021 TO 2022.

This season was a time of change and challenges for our eagles on the Delta2 nest. We lost our dear Trooper.............and Ma again injured her left leg. There were no eggs this year, which is a good thing. The nest tree itself suffered much decay and damage, partly due to the condition of the tree and partly due to several wind storms and heavy rains.......it was the last year for this nest to remain as home to our adults. A GoFundMe campaign was set up to raise funds to pay for erecting a new pole and nest for Ma and her mate in the coming year. This current tree was barely staying together and if we wanted Ma to remain in this area we needed to provide a new nest for her to return to after her migration. And 2 new cams were needed as well.

September 28th, 2021
a possible eagle was seen on the first tower. Ma and Trooper’s territory, but others have perched there too.

October 6th, 2021
a large bird, looking like an adult eagle, was again spotted on the first tower.

October 7th, 2021
...... adult on the far right pole...........it flew to the middle tower where it is thought to have spent the night. Looks like one of our pair had returned, but could not be confirmed.

October 8th 2021 showed us another adult thought to be the mate from the Delta2 nest. Looks like both Ma and Trooper were back from their migration. Both Ma and Trooper came to the nest that evening.

October 8th, 2021 also found both the bluff eagles home. Unfortunately we were not able to see much of this nest this year.

On November 15, 2021
there was a major wind and rain storm here. It was a devastating storm causing flooding, evacuations, road closures and slides in the local area. The branch holding the WEST cam snapped during that storm. It still offered a view of the nest itself but it was felt that the cam operators should not use it for fear of it falling completely. Several branches were broken from the nesting tree.

February 8, 2022.............The last verified sighting of Trooper. He disappeared that day and was not seen again. No one knows what happened to him.

Ma guarded the nest the best she could afterwards as other adults or pairs of adults challenged her for her territory. Ma had a few different males courting her and it was thought that she mated with at least one of them on March 5th. But a different male, we called DM (Delta Male) was her choice and he stayed with Ma until the end of the season. DM was a good reliable mate for Ma sticking close by and helping her as she needed.

Eggs are usually laid around this time (March) but this year there were none. A lot of things for Ma to contend with and with our decaying nest tree it is good that no harm came to any eagles who visited there.

March 14, 2022.......... The WEST cam fell to the ground. It was no longer a danger to our pair. That cam was removed from the property.

May 18, 2022........Another very big windstorm in the area. More damage to the nest tree.

June 13, 2022.......Ma came to the nest with a very visible limp of her left leg. She had injured it again. Possibly her leg, or foot or toe. Likely broken as she limped for the remainder of the season. She was seen several times just before she left on her migration.......just lying in the nest resting her leg.

July 17, 2022.......The remaining cam in the tree dropped down and although still streaming the view was at a slant and very limited. It was thought that some of the strapping or supporting brackets gave way. From that time onward the cam was only able to see the nest itself and a very limited amount of the surrounding area. Most of the perching poles, towers and trees where Ma perches were no longer in view.

July 25, 2022.......Last sighting of Ma. She has spent the previous days lying down in the nest. Thoughts were that she was resting up her leg to make it stronger and well rested before migrating.

August 1, 2022.....Last sighting of DM. He was in the nest and on the first tower early in the morning.

TOWER EAGLES NEST

On September 18th and 19th 2021, a large bird, likely an eagle was spotted on a small tower to the right of the big Tower nest. It was possibly one of that pair, but there was no way to confirm.

On October 5th and October 8th, 2021 we noticed that first one, then both of the Tower adults were home.

April 11, 2022.........One of our zoomers spotted a chick on the big Tower nest. Followed by sighting of a 2nd chick there on April 27th.

May 18, 2022........Another very big windstorm in the area. One of the Tower eaglets seemed to disappear around this time, possibly afterwards.......only one eaglet remained and it did fledge successfully.

July 8, 2022...........Tower eaglet fledged! It was also seen returning safely to its nesting tower that day.

July 17, 2022.......After losing the view from the remaining cam on the Delta2 nest, we were no longer able to see the Tower nest. All 3 of those eagles were doing well at that time.

Safe journey on your migration Ma, DM and all eagles in the area! Looking forward to your return in a few weeks! :rh:

Thanks so much, Jean, for the wonderful nest summary. So many events happened this year and losing Trooper from our watchful eye is still hard to fathom. Want to believe he is now on his migration to the salmon runs. Remember fondly when Trooper (then known as AME) came to Delta. He turned out to be a wonderful mate for Ma. After hanging back and allowing Ma to take care of Dusk and Dawn, he stayed around the nest, taking care of nest business after Ma left that year. He seemed tireless, watching over the territory for Ma. Thus, he was named Trooper. And what a proper name for a magnificent mate for Ma and a papa for their eaglets. :rh:

Here is the video of Ma and Trooper coming home this nesting season.

8:13pm....Oh boy.........that sun is making it hard to see anything on the nest right now.

Nothing of significance happening. The only birds I saw were these ones flying past the evergreen tree.

Sun won't be down for a little while yet.
