The nest tree.............The barn in the first picture is no longer there. It was demolished on May 2, 2020.

On August 22, 2020 the nest tree was determined to be in poor condition. It was "overhauled" by David and crew, pruned of long, brittle branches and timber supports were placed underneath the nest to give it solid support. So the nest tree now looks a bit different than in the upper photos. Photos below taken by Darlene on the day this was done.

History of the Nest.

There have been eagles in this territory in Delta, British Columbia, not far from the Tsawwassen Ferry, since at least the late 1990s. They initially took over and rebuilt a red tail hawk nest, then nested on high tension power poles for a few years, then moved back to the nest in 2010 and successfully raised two eaglets. A camera was installed for 2011.

There are other eagle pairs nesting nearby – and the cameras are powerful enough, and the “zoomers” who control them are skilled enough, that we can not only see the resident pair perched on towers guarding their territory – we can sometimes see the neighbours on a further pole, near where the territories meet.

2011.........2 eaglets raised.........Oreo and Jet. Oreo fell or was blown from the nest and was rescued and taken to O.W.L. as he couldn't be safely returned to the nest. Jet fledged.

2012..........2 eaglets raised..........Goldwing and Linux. Goldwing did not survive and Linux needed some rescue help from OWL but did fledge afterwards.

2013........2 eggs laid, but only one hatched.........Tux. Tux fledged successfully.

2014.......Feb, 8, 2014...........Ma severely injured her left leg, possibly broke it. Ma still laid 2 eggs that year and 2 eaglets did fledge.........Ariel and Hunter.

2015..........2 eggs laid..........none hatched as our adults were frequently off the nest.......something likely disturbed them that year..........A summer storm happened overnight on August 28th/29th, 2015 while our adults were away on their migration. It completely snapped the nest tree and the nest fell to the ground. A starter nest was built in the tree we had been calling the Barn Tree. This nest was accepted by Ma and Pa when they returned from their migration and life carried on using the newly constructed nest.

2016..........2 eggs laid.....both hatched.............Ace and Pippin. Sadly, Pippin became ill and passed away. Ace successfully fledged.

2017..........2 eaglets raised........Spirit and Jewel. Both fledged successfully.

2018........Sad turn of events this year. Pa went missing on June 1, 2018 and was not seen after that. Ma struggled with other adult and sub adult eagles to maintain control of her nest which had 2 chicks on it at this time. When Pa disappeared they were just over 7 weeks old. They were Dusk and Dawn. Both eaglets did fledge successfully as Ma befriended a male during this time. This male became known as Trooper.

2019........Trooper returned in the Fall to become the new male on the nest, Ma's mate. They raised 2 eaglets, Bella and Coola. Both did well with a successful fledge for them both.

2020.........Ma laid 3 eggs this year. Only 2 hatched. Sunny, the eldest chick, slipped from a branch @81 days of age..........was seen that night by searchers but no sign of him after that. Shadow accidentally fledged @83 days of age.......a successful fledge, he was around for a couple of weeks afterwards.

2021...........Ma again laid 3 eggs, only 2 hatched. Both eaglets, Hope and Chase fledged successfully.

***October 5th and October 8th.........Tower adults came home.

*** October 9, 2021.........Both Bluff adults home now.

*** November 15, 2021........A major wind and rain storm hit the southern half of BC. It caused major landslides, roads washed out and flooding all over. At the Delta2 nest it resulted in a broken tree limb that the WEST cam was attached to. It had no secure attachment to the tree after that but kept on streaming although the view was at a slant. After consultations with David it was decided to leave the cam rather than trying to remove it as the fear was that seeing humans in the tree could cause our adults to abandon the nest.

*** February 8th, 2022 :( ..............Last sighting of our male Trooper. It is unknown what has happened to him.

*** March 5, 2022...........Ma seen mating with a new male.

***From about Feb. 22nd onward Tower eagles seen hanging around their nest all the time. Possible eggs laid from that time on. Now incubation is clearly in progress. 2 chicks were seen but only 1 survived to fledge on July 8, 2022.

***March 14, 2022.............The broken limb that the WEST cam was attached to fell to the ground. No eggs or eagles were harmed. The view became unusable at this point.
1.JPG

***June 13, 2022........Ma was seen in the nest with a very serious limp to her left leg/foot. It was not known how this happened. The limp remained until Ma left the area for migration.

Pictures taken July 8th, 2022...........possible broken toe (unconfirmed).
1.JPG
2.JPG

*** July 7, 2022...........The only cam left on the nest was seen to have dropped and tilted. Aphovasse observed the cam from the ground and it is felt this was caused by another branch of the tree snapping off. Cam is operating but angle is poor.

How to identify our adults..................Ma.

Eye dots are one permanent marker to ID an eagle. They do not change.
Ma's eye dots are very difficult to see.
1.JPG
2.JPG

Ma has ridges on her beak, (Trooper has some too) but they are a bit more noticeable than the ridges on Trooper's beak.

How to identify our adults.............Trooper.

Trooper has a long white collar feather that hangs down from his front collar which is noticeable particularly when standing in this position with his head turned to the left.
1.JPG

When bending down we often see a noticeable white back collar feather which is longer than the rest of the collar and in 2019 we noticed he had a "curly" feather on his back.
2.JPG

Trooper had an injury to the right side of his beak in 2018. It bruised and became a noticeable crease as seen in 2019.

How to identify our adults.............Comparing Ma with Trooper.

Ma has a front collar notch.......Trooper has a back collar notch (not always visible).
1.JPG

Back collars........Trooper's edge is a rougher looking zig zag in shape.......Ma has a finer edge to her collar at the back.
2.JPG

Tails........Trooper's is slimmer usually (not in this pic).....more tapered with tattered ends. Ma's is wider and neater.

In General...............

Collars change over time and with the wind and conditions of the moment. But their collars are distinct, and look different from each other on many occasions.

Ma has eye dots...........Trooper does not (that we have yet seen).

Trooper's tail often seems to have a tattered look with fringes at the tips of his feathers there.

Trooper has that very distinctive "crease" on the right side of his beak. If his beak is dirty or the lighting is not good we don't see it easily.

Ma may occasionally limp, especially during nesting season. But her previous injury has healed well and most of the time we don't see the limp at all.

Generally speaking the male is smaller than the female. The female usually has broader shoulders (like a linebacker). David says this is so the female can properly support the male on her for a successful mating.

Neighbouring eagle nests.

There are 3 other nests (neighbours) that can be seen with our cams. What we see in any of those nests (whether they are located on a tower or in a tree) often depends upon the weather conditions at the time because they are so far away and also depends on how many leaves are blocking our view. Bright sunlight is favorable for viewing them and with our area experiencing lots of cloud, rain and fog at times............it is often difficult or impossible to see them. And as they are in the distance any view we get it small. To make it easier to identify these 3 locations it has been decided to give each of these nests a name. This makes for easier posting and better recognition of which nest is being commented on. There is one more nest called the Bluff nest which at times can be barely located with our cams.........it is not close enough to see any details of consequence. Once leaves grow on our tree limbs the view of some of these nests is blocked. Best time to see these nests is Fall/Winter when our nest tree is bare of leaves.

1. The Tower nest............home of the tower eagles. This is the closest neighbor to Ma and Trooper. The tower they nest on is located to the right of Ma and Trooper's nest. It is very easy to see from both our WEST and EAST cams during all times of the year.
1.JPG

2. The Field nest............home of the field eagles. Looking to the East field we can sometimes see a tall tower there. In the past we've seen adults perched there and it is believed they nest in that tower although we rarely get a glimpse of them there. Most of the time we can only see this from the EAST cam. As the trees in the area are continuing to grow, it is noted that our views here are becoming increasingly more difficult to see. Branches are now blocking much of the view.
2.JPG

3. The Bay nest...........home of the bay eagles. This is the most recent nest found.........located in a tree towards Boundary Bay. Two adults were seen perched in this tree together. This nest can only be seen using the WEST cam. Once leaves grow on our nest tree this view is blocked.

GENERAL MAP OF THE AREA AROUND THE NEST

This is a general map of the area around the Delta2 eagles nest which shows the layout of important points of interest.

It shows the poles, towers and other perching spots for our eagles. This is the view we see with our cams with the Delta2 nest in the center and gives the actual order of things as we follow around with the cams. It indicates how all these spots are positioned in relation to each other and to the nest itself.

Thanks to Sandy for all the work in creating this map.

Map updated January 15, 2022.

TIPS FOR POSTING VIDEOS TO THE FORUM AND TO YOUTUBE: (Thanks Sandy).

For a video post I am going to type out the instructions I copied a long time ago from a help thread on "How to Do Posh Links." There are two methods listed there but this is the one I use. I think Sue does too but she may have another way.

1. Copy the url address for the youtube link of the video uploaded to youtube.

2. Insert the "green camera" icon. Type in the post (left bracket) [url=

3. Paste the copied youtube url of the link after the =

4. Type ] (right bracket) at the end of the pasted link

5. Type the name of your video after the right bracket

6. After typing the name of the video, type in [/url]

7. Preview post to make sure the link works and the name is accurately displayed.

Here is an example providing an example of the icon and the string of instructions, plus a preview of the post.

5.JPG

To upload a video to YouTube:

I found this simple information from a google search. I don't have a video to upload so don't have screen shots for each of the steps. Basically, just go next, next and make sure you select "public" in one of the selections. I typically will choose my own thumbnail as it is processed. You can see this step in the processing window. There are two different links that has the same information but worded a bit differently.

Instructions:

Log in to your YouTube account.

Click on the video icon at the top right hand side of the window, which can be found next to your user icon, messages, apps, and notifications. Camera icon for dropdown to upload video.

1.JPG
1.JPG (12.42 KiB) Viewed 8978 times

Click ‘Upload Video.’

Then, press ‘select files to upload’ to find the video file saved on your computer. Or, you can drag and drop it into the window.

An optional step is to choose the privacy settings on your video (but more on that below). If you choose to stop after this, you will technically have achieved what this article is all about. Namely, your video will now be on YouTube. That said, it will be lacking a proper description and tags, which are crucial if you want your content to be found by the community of viewers.

Also, if you don’t change the name of your video, it will automatically be rocking the same file name as when you uploaded it from your computer. To avoid that (and to properly finalize the process), you’ll need to fill out the following sections:

Add an SEO friendly title (google search friendly) so that it’s more easily discoverable via search engines.

Add a description of the video so people know what your content is about before watching it.

Add tags, which act as tools to help the discovery of your video.

Link with this information: https://www.wix.com/blog/2019/02/how-to ... ube-guide/

Another link with information to upload. Scroll down to see the information.
https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to- ... to-youtube

1. Navigate to YouTube in a web browser.

2. Make sure you are logged in. If you don't see your account avatar in the upper right corner, click "Sign In" and enter your Google account information.

3. Click the Create a video button at the top of the screen. It looks like a video camera. In the drop-down menu, click "Upload video."

4. The video upload page should appear. Under "Select files to upload," click "Public" and choose what level of visibility you want for the video — everyone can see a public video, but you can also make it unlisted (it's still publicly available, but only to people with a direct link), private (meaning only you have access), or Scheduled, which means it won't go live until a later date.

5. Click the large arrow to choose the video file, or you can simply drag the video file onto the page.

6. While the video uploads, you can enter information like the name and description of the video.

7. Click "Publish" to complete the process. You can publish the video while it's still uploading, or wait till the upload is complete. Either way, the video won't appear online unless you click "Publish."

Hope this helps,

Sandy

WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSION THREAD FOR 2021 TO 2022.

Ma and Trooper are back home! Ma arrived first, the day before Trooper...........October 7th and 8th. Ma was waiting for him on the far right pole when she spotted him near. She called out to him and he suddenly appeared and in his dramatic and somewhat comical way he did a bit of a sky dance to signal hello to her. He then flew to land at the left on the tower there. They both visited the nest tonight...........moved a few sticks around including the one that Hope had left there. Then they headed to the stick tree for the night.

Video of Trooper arriving and his greeting to Ma.........by Sandy.
