8:27pm...........The cams have looked around the area several times. There are no eagles on the poles, towers, or usual perching spots. We are seeing nothing of our eagles now. It is quiet.

The sun is setting soon and we see an ending to our day. With that comes the realization that Ma and Trooper have left on their migration. We last saw our adults yesterday morning and Shadow was last seen the day before that. Trooper brought a bit of greenery to the nest.......sort of his trade mark. I'm glad we saw both of them. Then I am guessing they started their journey north after one last check of the nest. They know that Shadow is on his way too so they feel they are able to leave now.

At this time I want to say a very special thanks to all our zoomers here who've taken time out of their lives to document our eagles in this nest. This is a voluntary job, full of excitement, worry, sadness and joy all mixed into one as we fall in love with our eagles we watch as they raise their families. Many thanks zoomers.........I know you are all exhausted.........please take your much needed breaks and spend time with your families.

Many thanks to all the people who've stopped by and posted their thoughts and observations. We've enjoyed taking this journey with you and hope to see you all return, as we will in the Fall as we watch for Ma and Trooper to return. :grhug:

How fitting to see a wee bird on the middle tower.......all safe now.............big eagles are away.

8:45pm........As we look back on this year we have memories of our two sweet eaglets. Sunny and Shadow were a delight to watch. And with sadness we think of Sunny as we don't know what happened after he fell from the nest on July 1st. We hold out hope that somehow he made it........somehow he found a way as he certainly was about the right age to survive and we hope he has gone on to live the life he was meant to.

SUMMARY OF DELTA 2........... 2019 to 2020.

GENERAL
This season was one with ups and downs.............Ma and Trooper were back in good health from their migration. They prepared the nest upon returning from their migration. 3 eggs were laid, but only 2 of those eggs hatched. Growth and development of the 2 chicks (Sunny and Shadow) went as expected but as fledging time neared and our eaglets were strengthening their wings and trying out new physical moves, our first hatched eaglet, Sunny, slipped from a branch, went down to the ground and was not seen after that night. Shadow fledged accidentally after also slipping off a branch but he was not hurt. Shadow was last seen on August 1st.

ADULTS RETURN
On Sept. 24th there was possibly an eagle on the first tower. This is one of Ma and Trooper’s regular perching spots so we hoped it was one of the home again. That could not be confirmed. On Sept. 28th Trooper was seen on the evergreen tree at 6:28pm. He came to the nest a moment later...............Confirmed......Trooper was back from his migration! The next day on Sept. 29th 2 eagles appeared on the first tower............they were there for several hours. Trooper himself came to the nest tree....still no confirmation of Ma. Finally on Sept. 30th both Ma and Trooper came to the nest so we knew they were both safely home.

Lots of visitors were noted in the area between December and February. Ma and Trooper kept watch on the nest so it remained secure and they renovated the nest to their liking. We witnessed mating/bonding attempts with our adults and hopes were high for eggs to be laid soon.

EGGS LAID AND HATCHED
Ma laid her first egg on March 1, 2020 at 5:39pm. The second egg was laid on March 4, 2020 at 2:26pm. Much to everyone’s surprise Ma laid a 3rd egg on March 7, 2020 at 7:04pm. Worries set in as a week between eaglets hatching could be problematic. But our adults are so expertise that the hatches were very close together. The third egg did not hatch at all. Thoughts were that this unhatched egg was possibly the first one laid and not viable but we will never know for sure. That egg disappeared into the nest as more nesting material was brought in. It was last seen in the nest on April 21st.

The first hatch occurred on April 11, 2020 at 4:00am. The second egg hatched on April 12, 2020 at 4:10am. That was almost exactly 24 hours apart! Great job of cooling down those eggs Ma and Trooper!

WELCOME SUNNY AND SHADOW

Suggestions from viewers were welcomed and then voted on.............our chicks were named Sunny and Shadow. Both eaglets received lots of food from their parents and developed as expected. A variety of prey came into the nest and both adults fed them. Trooper really seemed to mature this year and was a wonderful provider for his family.

BRANCHING AND FLEDGING
On June 15th Sunny discovered the short stump at the side of the nest and went up onto it. Shadow followed suit that night. Both eaglets were 9 weeks old. We are considering this a branching because they were not actually in the nest itself. On June 22nd both eaglets were onto the lower portion of a long branch of the nest. They were then 10 weeks old.

During the next few weeks we watched both eaglets as they began to discover the power of their wings. They did much wingersizing and hopping or leaping across the nest. The long branches coming out from the nest became new perching spots for Sunny and Shadow.

Unfortunately on July 1, 2020 at 7:09pm. our eldest eaglet Sunny (81 days old) was high up on a branch of the tree and when he came down to land in the nest, he missed the nest and went down to the ground. David and others came as quickly as they could but it was already getting dark. They did see Sunny flying low along the ground of the fields but they were unable to catch him or see where he went as he flew into the darkness. More searchers continued to look for Sunny the following day but no sign of Sunny was ever seen again. We do not know what happened to him. One interesting thought was that a nest that David monitors suddenly seemed to have an extra eaglet in it.......and while we hope that Sunny found another adult to look after him there can be no confirmation of this at all and it not a common thing to happen.

Shadow continued to strengthen his wings and skills............he too had an accidental fledge on July 4th at 8:16pm (83 days old). But he was seen afterwards in the stick tree nearby so he was safe. Shadow made it back to the nest the next day. From that day onward he continued to fly in and out of the nest.........increasingly strong flying skills were evident as time went by.

Shadow stayed around the area coming to and from the nest for nearly a month. He rested there and ate several meals there. He loved to sleep in the nearby stick tree. Shadow was last seen on August 1, 2020 at 10:11am as he flew off of Ma’s perch and over the fields. He has not returned since then.

Ma and Trooper came to the nest the morning of August 2nd. they brought some greenery at that time. They were not seen again after Trooper’s last visit at about 7:30am. They likely started their migration in the early morning after that final nest visit.

TOWER EAGLES
The big hydro tower that can be seen from our cams had an active nest this year too. Both adults were in attendance and there were definitely 2 eaglets that were visible. One eaglet seemed to be much bigger than the other. One eaglet disappeared from our view so it was assumed that he fledged. The last eaglet could have been the smaller one and might have needed more time to mature before leaving the nest. So this one stayed for a lot longer than the other one. But it too eventually left our view and it was assumed that a fledge had happened then as well.

ADDED
Many sighting of various fledglings were seen in the following weeks. They were in all the areas around our Delta nest so it looks like it had been a productive successful year for other eagle families in the area.

Ma and Trooper are a hard working dedicated pair of adults and that was evident as the months passed. They have a strong bond and work together as if knowing exactly what their duties are and what they need to do. Great job Ma and Trooper.......you are the best parents any eaglet could wish for! Fly safely on your migration and return to us in the Fall, healthy and well rested.

To all our adults, sub adults, juvies and fledglings............fly free, stay safe and find some big, delicious salmon on your migration journey.

8:55pm.......One last look at the Delta sunset tonight.
1.JPG
Our season with our eagles has come to a close. Most zoomers will be taking time off now. But they can still move the cams for a look every now and then if they wish. Our cams are always on, night and day and sometimes we see some interesting things there even if the eagles are away.

Please check in for our cam maintenance and cleaning.........guessing the timeline might be around the end of August or early September. David and crew should be around at that time and we shall see the spiders webs and overgrown offshoots from the branches taken care of.

Thanks so much everyone for all the time you've spent here.

Fly safely Sunny and Shadow, Ma and Trooper........may you find the biggest fish you can eat......We shall miss you. Return safely in the Fall Ma and Trooper. :rh: :rh: :rh: :rh:

As we say goodbye to Shadow, I took some snippets of footage I had from August 1st and created a video of Shadow's last visit to the nest. The following is a description of Shadow's last activities that morning, August 1, 2020. I hope you enjoy.
Shadow, Ma and Trooper’s second fledgling, last appeared at the nest on the morning of August 1, 2020. Shadow flew in possibly from the stick tree where he would spend his nights. As Shadow lands in the nest, he does his little button bump and takes a rest in the nest. Then Shadow checks for any leftovers or a nest toy to play with in the nest. Then it is out to Ma’s perch from where he could watch his parents, Ma and Trooper out at the towers and poles. Shadow checks out the nest and does some a bit of preening. Then it is a hop up to the long branch and off to the evergreens. He does some fancy footwork on the branch and pulling at the evergreens. Shadow then flies over and tumbles down in the evergreens. Later, Shadow returns to the nest and perches on Ma’s favorite perch, again to where he can see poles and towers where Ma or Trooper maybe perched. Mid-morning, Shadow is back to the nest and flies off for the last time from Ma’s perch to the fields beyond. This would be the last time we see Shadow in the nest tree. He may have been spotted flying out in the field later but couldn’t be verified. Included at the ending are close ups of Shadow during the last days at the nest.

Soar high and free and always have a full crop, Shadow. Ma and Trooper fulfilled their destiny in raising you well to grow into a fine young eagle. As it is with sadness to see you go but it is time for you to begin your eagle journey. More importantly, it is with happiness knowing you will become a stunning and magnificent eagle.

We loved watching you grow into a fine young eagle, Shadow. And it is until we see you again next fall, Ma and Trooper, enjoy your well deserved vacation. You did well this season raising Sunny and Shadow. :rh:

Thank you all so much for your work here this season!

The summary and the collages are great, Jean, and I'm looking forward to watching Shadow's farewell video, Sandy.

Definitely a bittersweet time.

I've sent Ken an email to let him know the cams are down, and told him the eagles have left so it's not urgent - though we do want to know what happens while they are away.

Many thanks to all of you who took such good care of all of us visitors!!! Your thoughts, insights and pictures have been invaluable. JudyB said that this is a bittersweet time. So correct but I'm sure we all learned a lot and these wonderful birds helped fill in some empty spaces in our hearts. I'm certainly looking forward to the next season of "our" eagles! Thanks again. Season 2019-2020 has come to a full circle! What a great season Ma and Trooper again have raised beautiful eaglets to carry on
their legacy, Sunny and Shadow!

I want to thank all our cam operators who have given many hours throughout our season to keep watch on our eagle family
and posting the pics, scraps, updates so diligently so we didn't miss a thing with our Eagle family during the season.
The time , the effort, the dedication is unmeasurable to all.. And to the viewers as well who added updates to our forum
to document our wonderful eagle family.

Ma and Trooper raised two beautiful eaglets this season, Sunny and Shadow! Each season I watch, I am captivated by
their rearing of their young..Each season I learn more and more about our amazing Eagle family ..
As they wait for their young to go safely on their journey to their world, they too will leave as well.
As every season ends, The time has come for Ma n Trooper to leave for migration and well deserved break.
As we wait now in anticipation for them to return safe and strong and healthy end of Sept. to beginning of Oct.
from migration and back to their nest for next season.

From their wee white fluff balls hatchling to beautiful eaglets what a journey we have a pleasure to watch into their
world.
Though our Sunny had a mishap on fledge and we did not see her back at the nest , I keep in my heart that Sunny had
found her independence early and decided to stay out in her world and explore early on and that she met up with shadow
and has continued her journey along side with her sibling and live the life they were meant to do..

Shadow as the days went by became a very independent, inquisitive, strong and "comical" at times eaglet and grew into
a Majestic juvie.. I will surely miss the days just sitting and watching him perched on Ma's throne , sleeping in the nest,
perched on the branch and looking out over his world and i'm just asking myself wonder what he is thinking..and jumping
in child like manner playing with the sticks and oh that sweet voice sqeeing at the top of his lungs !
A sweet note indeed to hear..He will be fierce and soar the sky's and to own what is his..
Soar High and Free, find abundant food, and Be Strong and Healthy..
For it is not goodbye, its see you later.

I have enjoyed another season with you watching our Delta family raise another family to carry on their legacy!
It has been a wonderful and another memorable season. I will still be watching our nest and waiting for Ma and Trooper
to return this fall.

Take some time to enjoy the simple things in life and reflect...
