12:36pm............Checked around with the cams..........Absolutely no birds to be seen with the cams. I can hear some human noises nearby but that is all.

I am now OFF both cams.

Good afternoon, everyone.

I was checking some of the cams, and am taking a look back on the dvr on the East cam - and I'm seeing it jumped from around 11:30 last night to around 4:50 this morning - which seems a bit strange, but Surrey North did something similar, from about 2 am to 5:30 am (Surrey South streamed straight through). The gap in the middle of the night let me look back to about 5:15 pm yesterday, and I didn't see anyone on the nest (though it was a quick look).

The West cam went back to about 3:30 pm yesterday, and had gaps from roughly 9:20 - 11 pm and again from around 11:30 to 4:50 this morning, and then a little one from 9:55 am - 10:21 am and finally from 10:46 to 11:44 am. Must admit I'm finding this very strange.

For the record, I didn't see any visits while checking the West dvr, not that I expected any.

It's now 12:16 pm, and here are pictures of the nest for the record, in case there are changes.

Judy, this was happening during the season, where we would see gaps on the rollback. I was under the impression this was a YouTube issue as I had seen that same thing at other nests as well. I am pretty sure it’s not due to the cameras themselves because if the cams went down then the YouTube recording would stop completely and a new recording would start once the cam came back up. I haven’t seen this issue for a while though. It seemed like when YouTube went up to the 12 hour rollback across all cams, it seemed to not be a problem anymore. I think I remember this happening more when we only had a 4 hour rollback. In any case I thinks it’s a YouTube issue and maybe checking some non-HWF rollbacks will show they are all experiencing this same issue.

9:37am..............Had a look around with the cams. Cam controls very sticky this morning. There are no bird sounds at all..........very quiet. There is a good breeze today which should help to disapate the marine air over the bay area. Sunshine is warm and will help with that too.

BRINGING FORWARD THIS POST.............IF YOU CAN HELP IN ANY WAY PLEASE CONSIDER DOING SO SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO WATCH THIS EAGLE FAMILY!

Good morning, everyone!

Our Cam Maintenance Matching Drive is off to a great start - we've already had several people adopt nests for next season or donate in other ways!

Thank you so much for your support -
we absolutely could not do this without you!

We do still have a ways to go, and it's likely that we'll need a lift to work on the tree at Delta, which will make the work a bit more expensive than it has been in recent years when Myles has been able to climb the tree.

Image

Thanks also to those of you who have provided information about the work that needs to be done on site. I've tried to summarize everything here - please let me know if I missed anything, or if you've thought of something else, or if anything isn't clear:
  1. dome covers need replacement; Ken has found replacement covers and sent the info to Myles so he can order them
  2. all connections, loosed tape, wires etc. need to be checked; there's one long piece that interferes when using the West cam to look at the first tower and pole, and may be other places; it could be good if Myles could talk with one of the zoomers while he's working on the cams
  3. the main branches supporting the nest have sprouted small offshoots with leaves that block the view of part of the nest; it would be nice if those could be taken off if doing that wasn't a risk to the support branches - the tree has fewer branches as years go by
  4. there was a bad storm a few months ago and some large branches snapped off - and some of them got stuck up in the tree, and we're concerned they might fall on the nest at some point; they do block our view in spots; because the tree is brittle in spots, we need David and Myles to assess if it's better to try to remove them or to leave them in place or to secure them somehow
  5. is there any way the West cam can be moved further up or back - the eagles have been doing a great job building up the nest, and the cam is now too close to see the whole nest
It is my guess that they won't be able to move the West cam; as has been mentioned, many of the branches aren't that sturdy - and moving it higher would require a longer cable running to the cam, and I'm guessing a little coaxial extension cord isn't an option. But I may be wrong, which is why I'm putting it on the list to send to David and Myles.

The general time when eagles are away is early August through late September - more or less; different pairs do seem to have different schedules, and some take longer breaks than others. And David and Myles both have a lot of things scheduled during that time, so they don't always have as much flexibility as they'd like as to when they work on a nest.

Here's what we know about the variables for Delta: per Jean, adults seem to return about that first week in Oct. But last year Ma came home earlier on about Sept. 28th. She needed a mate then and needed to check the nest now as she was the only adult here. The worrisome thing is that even though we have definite dates for our adults to return, we do see eagles on the poles sooner than that. We just can't ID them until they come to the nest. So we always get worried if cam cleaning is left too late. And now that there is a new mate there we are not confident in estimating when he will return. Note: In 2017, Myles cleaned the cams on August 28, and then a flock of aphids showed up August 31 and left sticky spots on the newly cleaned cam covers - and Myles came back on September 16 and cleaned the cams again (I don't know how many days the aphids were around). In 2018, the cams were cleaned on September 17 - and the cams were definitely messy by the time they were cleaned, but I don't know if aphids were part of the problem, or when the peak period was if they were; I tried searching the thread for "aphid" but didn't find much discussion.

Please let me know if you have any additional thoughts or comments - you can send a PM or email me at [email protected].

And we really do need more money up front if we're going to rent a lift, so if there's any way you can make a donation towards that, that would be wonderful!
