Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

Thank you Sassyk. I did not know that the adults would go back to the nest, or go back together, to feed.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

Yesterday I saw an adult perched above the nest. Today there are two adults in the nest together, but no young visible. What does this mean?

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

I have not been able to see an adult on the nest for a few days. There was an adult perched nearby this morning but I presume that by now, if no chicks are visible, then it must have been unsuccessful.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

The adult in the nest has been often difficult to see as the nest must be deep. When a adult returns the crows are always close by. I am hoping to see young sometime soon.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

Sorry for the delay in replying.
I mean last year's location (2018/2019). The nest seems to have shifted or is perhaps more visible due to a loss of surrounding branches.
It was swaying a lot in last weekend's winds but is still there and there is an adult sitting there right now.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2019/2020 Season

I am just back to posting my observations of the nest above the playground. I can see an adult in the nest consistently and at other times it is presumably hunkered down. What is the timing of egg laying and hatching here? I am not sure what happened to the nest but it seems to be lower down after t...

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

Thoughts on the cause of death of the eaglets: given the number of rats we have it does seem logical that rat poison is the culprit. If so, could the adults have succumbed as well? You mention aspergillosis. In humans it usually occurs in people who are immunocompromised. Is this the same for birds?...

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

I have been watching the nest on and off during the day for the last week and have seen no sign of the adults.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

I have just seen one of the adults circling near the nest. It will be interesting if examination of the young reveals anything. I see that siblingcide is not uncommon but that would not explain both unless one was weak and preyed upon while the other was also underfed. Does anyone know if fish have ...

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

I have continued to look at the nest trying to identify the young. I thought that I saw one about five days ago but not since. The two adults were above the next early this morning. I presume that by now one or both of the young have fledged.

Re: the Bald Eagle nest in Beacon Hill Park: from my vantage point I think that I can see at least one young flapping its wings in the nest with an adult sitting just above.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

Maybe the same immatures. The ones I saw at the nest were about the same size as the adults. After looking at the Birds of Canada I would guess second year but I am no expert.

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

Thanks woodlands bleu and sassyk. I live on Park Blvd so am looking “up” at the nest and have a view of the activity but not into the nest. The other morning I saw what was probably one of the adults on a log close to the water on the east side of Clover Point and on Friday my partner spied an adult...

Re: Beacon Hill Park Eagles, Victoria BC - 2018/2019 Season

I am relatively new to Victoria and find that I can view the (a) Bald Eagle nest from my home to the east of the park. Is the nest between the playground and the bandshell the one that is being referred to in the posts as being near the totem pole? I saw the changeover between the adults yesterday m...
